Programmes of collaboration
London Symphony Orchestra
The LSO is the School’s neighbour in the Barbican Centre and there are several programmes of collaboration.

Senior musicians from the School also give pre-LSO concert recitals on the Barbican stage as part of the Guildhall Artists at the Barbican series and postgraduate students have the opportunity to take part in the LSO/ Guildhall ‘side-by-side’ scheme.
In addition, the School regularly works with the LSO’s Discovery Programme, giving students the opportunity to perform and collaborate in concert/ workshop activities at the stunning LSO St. Luke’s Music Education Centre, which is just eight minutes’ walk away from the Guildhall School.
Philharmonia Orchestra
The Philharmonia Orchestra is resident at London's South Bank Centre, the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, the De Montfort Hall in Leicester, Bedford Corn Exchange and the Megaron, Athens. Postgraduate students from the department of wind, brass and percussion regularly gain professional experience by 'sitting in' on selected rehearsals.
BBC Symphony Orchestra
Each year the School collaborates with the BBCSO on their Composer Days at the Barbican. Recently renamed ‘Total Immersion’, each Day celebrates the work of a contemporary composer. Previous explorations with the BBCSO have focused on the music of Lutoslawski, Martinu, Messiaen, Weill, Schnittke, John Adams, Mark Anthony Turnage, John Cage, James MacMillan, Elliott Carter, Sofia Gubaidulina and Judith Weir.
Barbican Centre
A Creative Learning division, incorporating Barbican Education and Guildhall Connect, has recently been established to provide inspirational insights and opportunities across the broad spectrum of programmes involving music, theatre, visual arts, cinema, dance and literature. All Creative Learning projects and programmes are designed to have the widest and deepest possible impact for audiences, participants, students, and professional practitioners alike. See our Connect page for further information.
Aldeburgh
The School has a strong connection with Aldeburgh Music including involvement in a variety of projects, performances and residencies. The Guildhall Connect programme undertakes regular projects with the Festival, both within the local community and through interdisciplinary residencies involving international visiting artists collaborating with Guildhall students.
London Contemporary Dance School
An annual collaboration between Guildhall composition students and LCDS student choreographers and dancers culminates in a number of public performances.
Royal Academy of Music
In 2009 students from the Guildhall School and the Royal Academy of Music combined to form an orchestra and chorus to perform Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony under the baton of Sir Colin Davis. Soloists were internationally acclaimed alumni drawn from each institution.
Royal College of Art
MAP/making: Exploring new landscapes in Music, Art and Performance

City of London Festival
Guildhall Connect collaborates with the Festival with annual outdoor performances in the City. There is also an increasingly close collaboration with City of London Festival in relation to Composition and Chamber Music culminating in Festival performances.
British Council
The Guildhall School has developed international projects in collaboration with the British Council, in countries including Spain (Madrid and Barcelona), the Philippines, Mexico and Israel, India and Singapore.
ECCO International
A strong partnership has evolved with ECCO (Education through Culture and Communication Organisation). This has led to several placement visits for Guildhall students and staff in the Gambia, offering opportunities to collaborate with a range of performing artists from West Africa.
Wigmore Hall
The Guildhall School has a fertile relationship with the prestigious Wigmore Hall. In addition to regular performances and workshops, the Guildhall Wigmore Recital Prize for an outstanding soloist was launched in 2009.
Kings Place
The School regularly performs at this exciting and newly opened concert hall north of St Pancras Station. It has a state-of-the-art facility and beautiful acoustics.
Bishopsgate Institute
The Creative Learning division is working increasingly in collaboration with the Bishopsgate Institute through the use of space for final performances as well as the development of BEAP: Bishopsgate Emerging Artists Programme which offers a regular platform for a diverse range of talented musicians coming from the School.
Composition
Composition students benefit from a programme of seminars given by distinguished international composers. Performance opportunities are generated internally by the School’s New Music Society, annual Festival of New Music and the New Music Ensemble. Externally, Guildhall School composers can take advantage of collaborative projects with a host of external organisations including Sound and Music, City of London Festival, the BBC Symphony and Philharmonia Orchestras, and the Orchestra of the Swan.

The Guildhall School is committed to cultivating alliances with international partners in a variety of ways, one of these being the ERASMUS Exchange Programme. In association with the British Council, the School participates in an exchange programme with an array of internationally renowned European conservatoires. Exchanges are available to music students through an application/audition process. If successful, the student will be able to study abroad, for a period of 3–5 months, while gaining credit to their degree. A grant is also awarded to help supplement living costs during the exchange period.
The Guildhall School currently has exchange agreements with a number of conservatoires in the following countries: Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
Please see our Frequently Asked Questions page, visit www.doremifasocrates.org or visit www.britishcouncil.org/erasmus for more information.
The School also has a collaboration with Griffith University, Australia, enabling a small number of students from each institution to study abroad and experience different methods of teaching and learning, and a different culture.
Commencing in 2010, the Guildhall School is establishing a collaboration with The Banff Centre in Canada, whereby a number of selected students will have the opportunity to spend short study periods at Banff.
