Joseph Sanders MA(Cantab) MSTAT Dip.RAM

Joseph Sanders MA (Cantab), Dip.RAM, MSTAT studied Modern Languages at Cambridge University before post graduate oboe studies with Janet Craxton at the Royal Academy and with Heinz Holliger at the Freiburg Musikhochschule in Germany.

He was oboist for Ensemble Modern Frankfurt for many years, playing in numerous world premieres and recordings and has worked with many of the leading composers of our day, including John Cage, Hans Werner Henze, Pierre Boulez, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Oliver Knussen George Benjamin, Maurizio Kagel, Heinz Holliger, HK Gruber, Helmut Lachenmann and Steve Reich.

He enjoys a varied diet of freelance work as soloist, chamber musician and principal oboe in the UK, everything from RPO and Rambert Dance, through opera, ballet and West End shows to the LSO.

At the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, alongside teaching the oboe, he is involved in wind coaching and Oboe Club and teaching tutorial groups. He is also actively engaged in music and brain research, being particularly interested in the relationship between performance creativity and performance anxiety.

A member of the Music and Brain Club, he is involved in tutoring MSc students at Goldsmith’s College.

He also teaches the Alexander Technique both at the Guildhall School and the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.
