Advanced Instrumental Studies (AIS)
This course is intended for keyboard players showing a high level of ability and musicianship with the potential for a career as a soloist or in chamber music.
Audition
Candidates prepare a varied recital programme of 60 minutes, from which the audition panel will choose extracts.
A repertoire list of the works played in the last two years is required.
Accompaniment (PACC)
Graham Johnson, Senior Professor of Accompaniment, takes regular public and private masterclasses, covering both the literary and musical background to various composers. Previous projects include a series of concerts celebrating Britten's birthday in 2001, a Wolf Festival for that composer's centenary in 2003, and a concert series featuring the songs of Ralph Vaughan Williams in 2008.
Iain Burnside has initiated several innovative performance projects for the course, combining music and drama.
There is a wide range of performance opportunities on the course, particularly at the weekly vocal and instrumental platforms and pianists are also encouraged to study languages alongside the singers. Successful students who progress to Part Two may be eligible for reduced fees and scholarship support, and professional accompaniment work is offered to these students to help them through their first year in the profession.
Audition
The audition includes both vocal and instrumental work with soloists engaged by the Guildhall School. Candidates should prepare for all of the following:
• Short solo piece of your own choice
• Set works (the Guildhall School will provide soloists):
- Martinu Variations on a theme of Rossini for cello and piano
- Schumann Erstes Grün Op 35 No 4 (G minor, high voice)
- Chausson Sérénade Italienne (B major, high voice)
• Sight-reading
• Short interview

Chamber Music Elective
Within the postgraduate programmes, Chamber Music has been the most popular of electives taken. During the Induction period, a number of repertoire play-through sessions are organised for prospective players to meet and play together in various combinations in order to find for themselves groups to work with during the year. Combinations can be not only within departments but also across all departments and across years (through working with advanced undergraduates). Opportunities for performance are considerable - from in-house concerts to outside engagements, community events and even Wigmore Hall workshops and concerts. Students are encouraged to pursue chamber music at this level even if they do not nominate it as an elective.
