William McAlpine 1922 - 2004

Bill McAlpine first came to the Guildhall School in 1945 as a student. His later career encompassed a wide variety of operatic and concert work throughout Britain and Europe. McAlpine was involved in two major Britten world premieres at the Royal Opera, Billy Budd and Gloriana. Further substantial work at Sadler's Wells and Scottish Opera, much of it under the baton of Alexander Gibson, followed before McAlpine retired from professional singing in the early 1980s and continued his teaching at the Guildhall School right up until his  death.
