The application and impact of artistic and professional practice in society
Repertoire for the 21st century
The science and art of artistry
Performance practices
Research brings students and staff together to explore fundamental questions relating to the development and impact of our artistic and professional practice in society:
-
what repertoire should we create and perform, and how should we perform it?
-
what does it mean to perform and what does it mean to witness a performance?
-
what is and will be the role of the performing arts in society and how can we help to shape their future?
-
how do performers learn and prepare for professional life, and how can their teachers best continue to develop good practice and keep up with research?
-
what role should the performing arts play in promoting health and well-being, and what helps creative and performing artists to get and stay fit?
Research methods and outputs are diverse. Research takes place through some of our most important artistic work: world-class compositions and new devised productions (which may also combine art forms such as music and poetry or music and visual art). Work focused on performance practices and the exploration of interpretation results in new editions and recordings of repertiore in addition to written publications. Research concentrating on the stages and processes involved in developing students as artistic practitioners typically feeds directly into the ongoing development of our programmes and the quality of our teaching and learning.
