20.03.07
Guildhall School violinist Jennifer Pike was awarded the Derek Butler Trust's London Prize in the first year of the new competition.
Along with candidates from the Royal Academy of Music, Royal College of Music and Trinity College of Music, Jennifer competed in a concert at Wigmore Hall, performing Debussy's Violin Sonata and Tambourin Chinois by Fritz Kreisler. She was awarded a prize of £7000.
In 2002, Jennifer became the youngest ever winner of BBC Young Musician of the Year at the age of 12. She went on to make her BBC Proms debut and Wigmore Hall debut in 2005, and in 2006 was awarded the Derek Butler postgraduate scholarship to study at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. She is currently on the Advanced Instrumental Studies course studying with David Takeno.
The Derek Butler Trust makes grants in the fields of HIV, cancer, music and music education. In 2006 the Trust resolved to establish a prize for the best candidate from four students at the four leading London music colleges who were then commencing their first year of postgraduate studies. Each receives a scholarship for one year of study, and also competes for the Derek Butler London Prize of £7000.
