Auditions/Interviews

Audition/interview arrangements

All applicants are offered an audition or interview designed to assess both attainment and potential.

Please refer to the programme description pages:

Acting

Music

Technical Theatre

for details of the audition and interview arrangements for each programme. Undergraduate music audition pieces are listed here (postgraduate requirements are listed within each course description). Most auditions and interviews will be held at the Guildhall School, London.

For details of possible Acting preliminary audition venues in the north of England and in North America, please check with the Drama Department.

All Music applicants currently resident in the EEA (all European Union countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) or Switzerland are required to travel to London to attend the audition in person. Applicants resident in other countries are also encouraged to attend the audition at the School but may choose to submit a recording. The School auditions annually in New York.

Additional material

Composition

Composition applicants should send photocopies of three compositions to arrive no later than the application deadline. This material should be securely bound and marked clearly with the applicant's name. If possible, a recording of the scores submitted should also be enclosed. In no circumstances will a recording be accepted without a score. Applicants are invited to bring to audition scores of works in progress. Scores will be returned to the applicant. DMus applicants must ensure they submit a CD recording and also submit a 1,000 word draft research proposal.

Electronic Music

In addition to making an application by the deadline, Electronic Music applicants are required to submit a recording of their own studio work and a résumé of their own electronic experience at least one week in advance of their audition. Both the recording and its case should be clearly labelled with the applicant's name.

All recorded material

The preferred format for a recorded audition is CD. Audio cassettes are acceptable but applicants are discouraged from submitting performances on video cassette, MiniDisc or in MP3 format. In all cases the recording must be unedited and must be ccompanied by:

• a certified statement that it is the applicant's own performance
• a list of all repertoire studied in the last two years.

Applicants submitting recorded material should label the actual material with their name and instrument. Unfortunately recorded material is non-returnable.

In no circumstances should applicants send recorded materials or applications directly to individual professors.
