Scholarships

"Without your help I would not have been able to undergo some of the best training this country has to offer, and I will be forever grateful to you for allowing me to do so."
- Samantha Béart, BA Acting, Ben Travers Scholar supported by the Fishmongers' Company

The Scholarships Fund

Every year the Guildhall School aims to provide financial help for its young musicians, actors and theatre technicians with awards from the Scholarships Fund. Awards are also made specifically in support of younger students attending Junior Guildhall.

All students are eligible to apply for support from the Scholarships Fund. The School makes awards according to each student's talent, their potential to beneift from our distinctive training, and their own financial need.

Through the generosity of a wide group of donors, including grant-making trusts and foundations, City livery companies, businesses and individuals, many students are able to take up their hard-won places or continue their studies at the School.

However, with increasing tuition and living costs year on year, there is always a need to make further financial support available to a greater number of students.

The cost of professional training

The training of young musicians, actors and theatre technicians is expensive: on average over £20,000 per student, per year. Statutory grants cover the majority of the cost, but the rest has to come from tuition fees.

For the 2009/10 academic year, our students will have to fund anything from £3,225 to £15,200 depending on whether they are studying at undergraduate or postgraduate level or taking a postgraduate course as an overseas student.

How you can help

There are a number of ways that you can help our students by making a donation through the Scholarships Fund.

You may like to cover the cost of a full- or half-fees award personally, with the opportunity to name the award so that this appears in the student's performance biography and CV. Alternatively, you may like to form a syndicate with a small number of other donors and make regular monthly donations over the course of a year. In return for your donation at these levels, we will put you in touch with the musician, actor or theatre technician benefiting from your support and you will be able to follow their progress at the Guildhall School during the academic year.

Smaller donations are equally welcome and can be made online through the Alumni Scholarships Appeal or by contacting the Development Office.

All donations to the Scholarships Fund are acknowledged in programmes and other publications on a regular basis.

"Your financial support has not only helped me out financially, but it also gave me the incentive to work at trying to be the best I can be, for that is the least I can do in return."
