Focusing on the recording and processing of ‘found sound’, our Electronic Music course explores various creative field recording and sound capturing techniques, as well as software platforms and audio processing techniques, applying their uses in a modern and creative ‘take’ on Musique Concrète.
The course includes a series of technical workshops, delivered by Jon Daou, designed to prepare you for practical work which will culminate in an artistic project led and directed by internationally renowned electronic musician, John Burton (aka Leafcutter John).
The course will help you:
- Use software and hardware in a creative context
- Understand the fundamentals of electronic music composition
- Develop your own artistic voice
- Experience practical music making with electronic technology
Your tutors
The course is taught by Jon Daou in partnership with Leafcutter John.
Jon Daou studied composition at the Purcell School, leaving with the David Cox Award for Outstanding Creative Achievement. He then went on to study composition and electronic music at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. Since graduating from Guildhall, Jon’s work as a freelance composer has seen his music featured on stages & screens across London and, more recently, the world, whilst he collaborates with film directors, dance choreographers, fashion designers and other artists. Jon is also accomplished as a techno producer & DJ, releasing on a variety of labels and often playing the London club scene.
Leafcutter John is an internationally renowned electronic musician, songwriter, and artist. He has released 5 critically acclaimed albums and has performed his award winning work worldwide in a live setting and on television and radio. John also develops music software and hardware intfaces and has worked in Dance, Theatre, and teaches at Brunel University. He has worked with Talvin Singh, Wayne Mcgregor's Random Dance, BBC Symphony and Concert orchestras. John has played concerts worldwide with Beck, Jarvis Cocker, Matmos, Grace Jones, Nick Cave, Keith Fullerton Whitman, Yo La Tengo, Beth Orton, Otomo Yoshihide, Aki Onda, Phillip Jeck, Tujiko Noriko Sebastian Rochford, Janek Schaefer and Tomoko Takahashi.
He is a member of the Mercury Prize-nominated band Polar Bear.
Our London location
The Guildhall School is situated in the City of London within the Barbican Arts Centre, which houses two theatres, a concert hall, cinemas and galleries. It is also within easy reach of West End theatres, the Royal Festival Hall, the Royal National Theatre and Shakespeare's Globe on the South Bank, Sadler's Wells Theatre and Tate Modern.

Participant requirements
Applicants must be 18 years of age or above on the first day of the course. Applicants should also ensure they have sufficient English language skills to be able to cope with the demands of this course.
Cancellation
A refund of fees can only be issued if written notification for a cancellation is received by Friday 26 June 2014. No refunds will be offered after this date unless a medical certificate is produced.

Assessments
Should you wish to use your participation in the summer school as credit for a university or college course you are undertaking, this would be a matter for you to agree with your current institution. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer assessments.
