Guildhall is an institution that knows it has to be connected to the outside world - that's the key thing. It's not a bubble. It has roots in the city and in the world.

One minute you could be playing in the Guildhall Studio Orchestra with jazz musicians, the next you could be playing in the opera pit, then the next minute you'll be with actors doing the musical and then playing a symphony in the orchestra.

At Guildhall, they don't hold your hand, but they're going to push you to become the actor that you want to be.

It's the scale of productions that really makes Guildhall stand out. It gets to the point where you think, wow, this is massive. In other places, you just wouldn't have that opportunity to learn on the job.

Disability

The School’s disability policy reflects that of the City of London, of which the School is a department. With regard to the services it provides to the public, and as an employer, it shares the Equal Opportunities Policy and the Disability Policy of the City of London (see below) but has, in addition, developed a policy statement to ensure the needs of students with disabilities are met.

Policy statement for students with disabilities

The School is committed to the equitable provision of education and support services to all students whatever their individual differences. It will be proactive in its response to disability issues by:

  1. progressively removing barriers affecting students with disabilities;
  2. ensuring that all students with identified disabilities are given appropriate guidance on application and agreed help and support on arrival and thereafter;
  3. ensuring that students whose disabilities are identified after arrival are given advice on their disability assessment, and help and support on diagnosis within available resources;
  4. making best effort to ensure that those providing disability services* meet identified needs by both appropriate resourcing and by staff development within available funding;
    setting annual targets for action;
  5. ensuring that disability and associated services are subject to periodic review and evaluation based on accurate data, and on sector best practice (including the QAA Code of Practice);
  6. involving disabled students in the planning, monitoring and evaluation of services;
  7. ensuring that there is congruence with other related school policies;
  8. communicating the disability policy clearly to all concerned, in the medium most appropriate to the person requiring it.

* The providing of Disability Services includes:

  • the disability contact point (Head of Welfare)
  • the counselling service
  • the School chaplain
  • senior staff with an overview of the student experience
  • programme tutors
  • IT services
  • library
  • the Students' Union
  • Manager & Deputy Manager of Sundial Court and Senior Students
  • registry access and admissions & examinations, and assessment
  • facilities management

City of London Corporation Equal Opportunities Policy

Quality and equality are core values that underpin all our activities. We believe that promoting equality will enrich our service delivery and ensure our services are fair and sensitive to people’s needs.

The City of London’s Equal Opportunities policy aims to achieve the following for disabled people:

  • Ensure staff are trained to meet the needs of disabled people.
  • Ensure that services are physically accessible to all that need to use them.
  • To provide information in a medium most appropriate to the needs of the person requiring it.
  • Provide communication aids to ensure that disabled people can both understand the service being provided and be understood by the service provider.
  • Involve disabled people in planning, monitoring and evaluation of services to ensure best practice and continuous improvement
