Meet the Team

You will be taught by a wide range of highly experienced tutors, encompassing Guildhall staff from across departments, Barbican associates and external specialists. Many of the tutors are Fellows or Senior Fellows of the Higher Education Academy (HEA). Below is a selection of some of the tutors associated with the programme.

Carlos Lopez-Real

Carlos is the Programme Leader for the PGCert Performance Teaching. He has taught at the Guildhall since 2005, having previously studied at postgraduate level at Guildhall and the Institute of Education. He is at the forefront of developing collaborative and transformative teaching and learning approaches, having also launched and led the multi-disciplinary BA Performance and Creative Enterprise (PACE) in 2015. He is a saxophonist, composer, and improviser who has recorded and toured extensively, and curated several club venues. He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts. He also holds a BA in Psychology and Philosophy from Oxford, and a postgraduate diploma in Coaching and Mentoring from the Institute of Leadership and Management. A lifelong learner, he is also currently studying for a Masters in Composition and Orchestration for media.

Ali Godfrey

Ali Godfrey

Ali is a director, deviser, teacher and facilitator. She has sixteen years’ experience teaching in HE and schools, and directing transformational productions with adults and young people in applied and participatory settings. Ali is the Founder & Artistic Director of Generation Arts, a not-for-profit theatre company delivering free acting and theatre-making programmes and devised theatre productions with disadvantaged young adults (see her TEDx talk). She is a visiting lecturer at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and London Metropolitan University, and Artist Mentor at The Barbican. Cultivating agency, her ethos is to support and challenge people in the margins to take creative risks and make their artistic voices heard through extraordinary devised theatre.

Alison Teale

Alison Teale

Alison is the Principal Cor Anglais player with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and has done much to expand the Cor Anglais repertoire and bring the instrument to the fore. Winning the Isle of Wight International Oboe competition in 2001 led to her Purcell Room debut and numerous concertos for BBC radio 3 broadcasts, notably Quiet City with Alison Balsom and Spaghetti Western with BBC NOW. In addition to teaching at Guildhall, Alison freelances with both British and International orchestras, performs solo and chamber recitals and is regularly asked to give masterclasses throughout the UK and Europe. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Cecelia Bruggemeyer

Cecelia Bruggemeyer

Cecelia is in much demand in the freelance world of Historically Informed Performance. Over the last 25 years she has been a regular member of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (OAE), English Baroque Soloists and (since it’s foundation) the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique, as well as being Principal bass for the London Handel Orchestra and Classical Opera, and receiving regular invitations from the Academy of Ancient Music and English Consort as Guest Principal. Cecelia has been teaching at Guildhall since 2008, and is very involved in the OAE’s education work; devising projects for under 5s, leading workshops in schools, and presenting concerts on stage. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Clare Tetley

Clare Tetley

After a PGCE at the Central School of Speech and Drama in 2006, Clare has worked as a Performing Arts teacher at the award-winning Newman Catholic College, Harlesden. Class-time is spent exploring the creative possibilities offered by rapidly changing populations of students- responding to their entitlement to a fitting arts education. Clare has a Masters in Creative Writing from the University of Oxford (2012), a Post Graduate Diploma in Psychology with Distinction (London Guildhall University, 2001) and a BA Hons in Social and Economic History and Philosophy (Manchester Metropolitan University, 1996). Clare has delivered workshops at the National Youth Theatre and supported students from a Pupil Referral Unit through Drama at Camden’s Roundhouse.

Detta Danford

Detta is a flute player, composer and project leader whose work involves collaborating, performing and creating new work with ensembles and orchestras and within theatre, film and the visual arts. She is co-founder of contemporary music ensemble Jetsam, whose most recent projects involved collaborations with writer and blogger Gareth E. Rees and actor, poet and director Tanroh Ishida. She has recently worked with the Southbank Centre, Barbican Centre, London Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Aside from PACE she teaches Masters in New Audiences and Innovative Practice programme at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Donal Wetherick

Donald Wetherick

Donald studied music at Edinburgh, musicology at Cambridge, and music therapy at the Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Centre, working as a music therapist since 1992. He has worked with children with autism and communication difficulties, children with learning disabilities and emotional/behavioural problems, and adults with long term health problems, including HIV/AIDS. He works at the Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Centre and teaches on the Masters in Music Therapy both there and at Guildhall. He has presented at the World Congress of Music Therapy, the BSMT Annual Conference, and writes and reviews for LINK music education magazine. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Endy McKay

Endy McKay

Endy is co-founder and creative director of Outspoken Arts, and has over 13 years’ experience as an actor and facilitator using the arts to respond to social issues. After training in acting at Mountview Theatre Academy, she worked nationally and internationally in theatre, television, film and radio and is a regular in Channel 4’s Bafta award winning comedy series Peep Show. She has run a variety of workshops for numerous institutions including the BRIT School, Hackney Learning Trust, Lyric Hammersmith, Arcola Theatre, The RSC, The Barbican, Hackney Empire, and various schools and universities nationwide. Endy also runs regular workshops with ESOL and Refugee groups and directs for Tricycle Young Company at Tricycle Theatre.

Helen Reid

Helen is currently professor of piano at the Guildhall School and Trinity College of Music, and has given masterclasses at most of the leading UK conservatoires. She also has much experience working with the elderly and children with special need, as well as primary school groups. She is currently particularly focused on early years settings, having founded Blackbird Early Years Music in Bristol. She has performed extensively nationally and internationally, with a wide-ranging repertoire. Helen also has a strong research interest in music and health, in particular issues around injury prevention in musicians. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Jayne Gold

Jayne Gold is an experienced educator and teacher trainer. She taught in secondary schools in inner London for ten years and was Head of Drama at Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School where she developed projects with leading theatres and organisations to raise young people’s aspirations, build their confidence and produce high quality theatre work. Jayne served on the board of trustees for Company 3, worked as a PGCE subject mentor for the Institute of Education and Middlesex University, and as a visiting lecturer at Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. Recently Jayne relocated to rural Wales, founding Stomping Space - an organisation focusing on the interplay between well-being, arts and nature for families and young-people.

Kenneth Rea

Kenneth Rea

Ken Rea is professor of theatre at Guildhall, and has initiated many ground-breaking collaborations between actors and musicians there. He works on what makes a performer (actor or musician) stand out from the rest, especially with regard to the projection of presence and charisma. His book The Outstanding Actor: Seven Keys to Success identifies the values and traits that characterise the greatest actors, and it gives a framework for producing more exciting work and having a more successful career as an actor. His research with classical musicians has shown the positive effects produced when musicians have applied certain acting techniques to their playing, or have worked alongside actors. He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Maureen Hanke

Maureen is a Music Education Trainer and Workshop Leader. She was Head of Norfolk Music Service for 17 years prior to which she was Head of Continuing Professional Development and Music Education at Trinity College of Music, working with musicians, music leaders and music teachers delivering accredited professional development and leading an MA course in Music Education. Her career to date also includes PGCE teacher training in music for CfBT and UEA and she continues to deliver workshops nationally. She was Chair of the Federation of Music Services and now sits as a trustee for Music Mark and is chair of governors for an outstanding school. She is the Co-author of Music Express, the award winning and highly-regarded series of books/resources including lesson plans, recordings, activities and photocopiables and a training manager for the award winning on-line music platform, Charanga.

Natasha Zielazinski

Natasha is a London based cellist and composer. She enjoys working collaboratively in dance, theatre and visual arts, most recently composing and touring with Kate Tempest in the theatre show Brand New Ancients. Natasha has performed at Sadler's Wells, the Southbank Centre, the Barbican Centre, the Melbourne International Festival, and Madison Square Gardens. She leads the Barbican Creative Learning ensemble Future Band, and additionally has worked with the New York Philharmonic, the Tokyo College of Music, Peabody Institute of Music, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the BBC Symphony Orchestra among others. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.


Ned Glasier

Ned Glasier

Ned is a theatre director and the artistic director of Company Three (originally Islington Community Theatre), a company of 75 young people aged 11-19 who make theatre through long-term, intensive collaboration with professional theatre-makers. They are trained as theatre-makers, helping them to understand themselves and the world around them, and to create work that allows them to express who they are. They make plays through a process of research and development, early-stage scratch (experimental performances) and professional productions. Their work has been seen at the National Theatre, the Royal Albert Hall, Battersea Arts Centre, The Yard Theatre, on Channel 4 and the BBC.

Neil Paris

Neil Paris

Neil works as a choreographer, director, performer and teacher. He is artistic director of SMITH dancetheatre and was a core member of Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre whose work received three Olivier nominations and toured internationally. He explores voice and it’s connection to the body and movement. He uses dance, theatre and yoga practices to explore imaginative ways of making connections and pathways through the body to the voice. He combines playful exercises designed to free the body and spark the imagination with disciplined quiet practices that connect us with our breathing and our own unique interior worlds.

Richard Hallam MBE

Richard Hallam MBE

Richard has a lifetime's experience in all aspects of music education including as a teacher, Advisor and Inspector, Head of Music Service, professional trumpet player, conductor and Government music education adviser. He is currently Chair of the Music Education Council, Executive board member of the International Society for Music Education (ISME), Chair of the ISME National Affiliate Council, member of the Department for Educations' Hub Advisory Group, and member of advisory board for Sistema Global. Richard is also a past president of the Incorporated Society of Musicians and past chair of the ISME Sistema. From 2008 to 2011 he was the National Music Participation Director and subsequently National Music Education Grant Director.

Roberta Wolff

Bobbie is a pianist, teacher, mentor and writer. She runs a studio in Surrey offering one to one lessons, performance coaching, group sessions, teacher mentoring, audition preparation, and musicianship training (incorporating Kodàly). In 2013 Bobbie began researching practice, learning and motivation. This became Music Me Piano Practice Resources, selling downloadable products online and appearing at the London Music Expo.  Bobbie writes for Pianodao, Tim Topham, and Skoove. In addition to the Guildhall PGCert, she is a mentor on the University of Chichester/ESTA Education PGCert Piano Teaching Course, a primary school governor and a Steinway trained piano technician. A theme of empowering and enabling others runs through Bobbie's career.
