Guildhall is an institution that knows it has to be connected to the outside world - that's the key thing. It's not a bubble. It has roots in the city and in the world.

One minute you could be playing in the Guildhall Studio Orchestra with jazz musicians, the next you could be playing in the opera pit, then the next minute you'll be with actors doing the musical and then playing a symphony in the orchestra.

I had access to people I would never have been able to meet as a young composer starting out.

At Guildhall, they don't hold your hand, but they're going to push you to become the actor that you want to be.

It's the scale of productions that really makes Guildhall stand out. It gets to the point where you think, wow, this is massive. In other places, you just wouldn't have that opportunity to learn on the job.

Master’s Student Loans

Government-backed postgraduate loans are available to help Master’s students towards the cost of their tuition fees and living expenses. These are non-means tested, repayable postgraduate student loans similar to those that are offered to undergraduate students.

Each country in the UK offers a slightly different loan scheme.  You should apply for a postgraduate loan from the county in which you are ordinarily resident.  If you are continuing straight from undergraduate to postgraduate study, this will be the country you lived in before university.  For students with settled or pre-settled status, or Irish nationals, applications should be made to Student Finance England.

If you are a new student joining Guildhall in 2021 and are resident in England, you can borrow up to £11,570 for the entire length of your course.  Payments will be made directly into your bank account in three instalments over the academic year. For courses longer than one year, the loans will be disbursed over the entire length of the course.

If you are from Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, you can also apply for funding.  The amounts will differ depending on what each devolved government provides.  For more details, please visit the government student loans website.

Applicant Eligibility

Whether you qualify for a student loan depends on several criteria including:

• previous study

• age

• nationality or residency status

For more details, please visit the government student loans website.

Course Eligibility

There are also additional course eligibility requirements for funding. For further information on the Guildhall Artist Masters course eligibility, please see Guildhall Artist Masters Eligibility for Postgraduate Loan Schemes. For information on all other course eligibility, please see the Guide to Funding for Master's Students.

Tuition Fee Payment Schedule

You will need to be prepared to pay your deposit and complete enrolment at Guildhall before the postgraduate loan is released to you. The postgraduate loan disbursement schedule differs from the School’s termly tuition fee deadline.

15 July 2021: to secure your offer to study at the School, a 15% tuition fees deposit is due on this date.

13 September 2022: 25% of your tuition fees is due on this date. Following confirmation of enrolment, the first loan instalment is paid directly to the student’s bank account by Student Finance England (SFE) or Student Finance Wales (SFW).

10 January 2022: 30% of your tuition fees are due (students in receipt of the postgraduate loan are extended a grace period until the second loan disbursement has been received)

10 January 2022: second instalment of your loan released from SFE/SFW

25 April 2022: 30% of your tuition fees are due

25 April 2022: third instalment released from SFE/SFW

Guildhall Artist Masters Eligibility for Postgraduate Loan Schemes

Erasmus+ Master Loans

While future participation in the Erasmus+ programme will depend on the outcome of Brexit negotiations, we will continue to accept incoming students on the scheme under current conditions. Students from partner institutions wishing to study at Guildhall in 2021/22 should consult their study abroad advisor to confirm that they are eligible to apply for Erasmus funding to study in the UK.

You can find full details about the Erasmus + Master Loan scheme on the website of the European Commission.

US Federal Loan

If you have been accepted on one of our Master’s degree programmes and you are a US citizen, you may be able to apply for a US Federal Loan.  This can help towards tuition fees and maintenance costs.  However, if you are studying on the doctoral programme or on a non-degree course (eg. Artist Diploma or Advanced Certificate) these courses are not eligible to receive Federal Aid.  You may, however, be eligible for a private loan such as Sallie Mae loans (with the exception of short courses).

For more information, please visit our US Federal Loan page.

Guildhall School Financial Assistance

The School also offers various financial awards, including Guildhall School Scholarships.  Find information about financial support provided by the School here.

There are no cash scholarships available for the PGCert in Performance Teaching. There are a limited number of partial tuition fee waivers, with priority given to Guildhall School staff (including CYM and partnership Hubs) and those who are assessed as overseas fee level.

External Funding (all postgraduates)

Postgraduate students who are not able to find private sponsorship will need to find alternative means to fund their studies. The School expects you to take the initiative in supporting your studies and advises you to apply to as many sources of funding as possible.

To help you find these funding opportunities, we can provide guidance on potential sources of external funding such as charities, foundations and educational trusts. In addition, we also provide information on how to plan and execute a fundraising campaign. Ideally, you should consider how to fund your studies a year prior to starting, as many funding application deadlines are between January and March of the previous academic year.

If you are applying for external funding you’ll need to check that the organisation does not already donate money to the School.  You can find a list of current donors on the School's supporters page.
