The Guildhall Studio Orchestra returns with special guest Mark Lockheart for the first performance and CD launch of Days on Earth, his epic new work for jazz sextet and 30-piece orchestra. This highly personal work is a culmination of many musical and life experiences and features a stellar group of UK jazz musicians. Lockheart’s many eclectic tastes are undoubtedly here, from cutting edge improvising and 70s funk to African Kora-harp melodies and Bollywood strings. Days On Earth is released on the Edition record label in January 2019.
This concert starts with a short set of Mark’s small ensemble music performed by jazz musicians from the Guildhall School.
Launched in 2017, Guildhall Studio Orchestra is the first of its kind in a UK conservatoire – open to students from every Guildhall department, whether classical or jazz. It offers them the chance to work side-by-side with professionals, and today’s finest arrangers, in the cross-genre repertoire that will become such a vital part of their careers.
