Biography

Tom Overton is a Barbican-Guildhall Archive Curator and former Research Fellow who is part of the team assembling and interpreting the Barbican's archives for the Centre’s 40th anniversary in 2022. He and colleagues won a £90,000 grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund for the Laying the Foundations project (2019-20). He is also an Archive Consultant on the Gulbenkian's Radical Roots project in 2019.

He catalogued the archive of the writer and artist John Berger at the British Library as part of an AHRC-funded Collaborative Doctoral Award, and edited Portraits: John Berger on Artists and Landscapes: John Berger on Art for Verso Books. He is now writing Berger's biography for Allen Lane.

Tom has been a Research Fellow at the Harry Ransom Center, Texas and Henry Moore Institute, Leeds, Writer-in-Residence at Jerwood Visual Arts, and a Visiting Fellow at the Centre for Life-writing Research, King's College London, and worked on archival digitisation and interpretation projects for the British Library and British Council and curated exhibitions at the Whitechapel Gallery and Somerset House. He has written for the Guardian, frieze, Brick, White Review, London Review of Books and Paris Review Blogs and others, and broadcast on BBC Radio 3, 4 and Resonance FM.
