Susan Waters GRSM LRAM ARCM
In addition to her highly-regarded holistic work as a Professor in the Faculty of Voice at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, where she has an international studio, Susan Waters also has a high global profile in her work with advanced and professional singers (National Opera Studio, Paris Conservatoire, Royal Opera House Young Artists).
Most recently in 2017 she has given Masterclasses in Oporto, to celebrate the centenary of the Conservatorio do Musica; in Zürich, at the Hochschüle für Kunst; and at the University of the Philippines, and the University of St Tomas,Manila. She also works widely in Portugal, where she has worked with artists at the San Carlos Opera, Lisbon, as well as giving masterclasses in the universities of Aveiro and Catolica,Oporto. Many of her former students now enjoy success in all branches of the classical singing world, including Monteverdi Choir, Polyphony, Swingle Singers, Royal Opera House, and as freelance soloists in the international opera and concert world.
Susan is an Honours Graduate from the Royal Academy of Music, London, where she was a principal study pianist, before winning the prestigious BP Scholarship to join the Opera programme at the Guildhall School. This immediately led to invitations to sing with Glyndebourne Festival Opera, English Bach Festival, and Aldeburgh Festival, where she sang in the premiere there of Britten's War Requiem. After pursuing a successful freelance career as a soprano, she decided to devote herself exclusively to the teaching of singing. Her first appointments were as Professor of Voice at Oxford and Cambridge Universities; she was invited to join the Vocal Faculty at the Guildhall School in 2001.
Future plans for Autumn-Winter 17-18 include return visits to Philippines and Portugal for Masterclasses.
In 2011 Susan was generously supported by Guildhall School’s Professional Development Programme to undertake research into Accent Method breathing, and tongue root and jaw re-alignment issues for singers.
