Robert Ehrlich (Visiting Professor)

Robert Ehrlich studied Music and Ethnomusicology at King’s College Cambridge and recorder with Walter van Hauwe at the Sweenlinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam. The start of his performing career was marked by top prizes in major music competitions in Great Britain, Holland and Germany such as the Munich International Competition (German Broadcasting Union/ARD) 1988, the Schott London Chamber Music Competition 1987 and the Moeck/SRP solo recorder competition 1989

Robert has toured extensively throughout Western and Eastern Europe, North America and Australia. His radio and TV broadcasts for the major Australian, British, Dutch, German, Polish and Spanish networks have included live concert relays from the Wigmore Hall in London and from the Berlin and Warsaw Philharmonic Halls. The critical reception of his CD recordings has been unanimously positive: '9' from Repertoire (France) for his Handel sonatas and 5 stars from BBC Music Magazine (UK) for his Telemann sonatas, both CDs from Globe Records.

From 1990 he taught at Southampton University and at the Musikhochschule in Karlsruhe, before being appointed Professor of Recorder in the newly founded department of Early Music at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater 'Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy' in Leipzig in 1993, where he was elected as Rector in 2006 and 2010. In 2015 he was elected as Rector of the Hochschule für Musik 'Hanns Eisler' in Berlin. He has given masterclasses in Birmingham, Boston, Canberra, London (Guildhall School, Royal College of Music), Montreal (McGill University), Montepulciano, Urbino, Warsaw and throughout Germany. Robert has published essays and book reviews in the leading English- and German-Language journals of interest to recorder players, including The American Recorder, Tibia, The Recorder Magazine, The Recorder (Australia) and Early Music. He has been Visiting Professor at the Guildhall School since 1998.
