Biography

Felicity Lipman was appointed Coordinator of String Chamber Music at Junior Guildhall in 2006. The vibrancy of the department has been reflected in two pupils performing Duoli by Heinz Holliger in a professional concert during the Kings Place festival of his music in 2010, and groups taking part in masterclasses given by Richard Ireland in Kings Place. In 2011, a number of groups were selected  to compete in the National Chamber Music Festival with one group going through to the final round and then being selected to play in the Chamber Champions Concert in Wigmore Hall. In 2012, all 10 groups succeeded through to the semi-final round, six going through to the final (more than from any other institution in the history of the competition), and two were selected to play in the Wigmore Hall Chamber Champions Concert.Felicity studied violin with Hugh Maguire, chamber music with Sidney Griller and Terence Weil, and chamber orchestra with Neville Marrinner at the Royal Academy of Music. As a postgraduate, she studied with Yossi Zivoni and took masterclasses with Orrea Pernell and Henryk Szeryng. She was later made Honorary Associate of RAM.Felicity has wide experience of performing in the UK and on the international stage. As leader of the Linley and Rasumovsky String Quartets, as violinist with the Haydn Piano Trio of London as well as recitalist and soloist, she has performed extensively in Europe as well as the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The repertoire has ranged widely from Biber and Bach to Bartok and Stravinsky. She has also played with a number of chamber orchestras including the Academy of St Martin’s-in-the-Fields and the Philomusica of London. She plays on a Grancino violin of 1690.Felicity has always combined performing with a passion for teaching, including the training of teachers in Britain and abroad. Prior to being appointed Professor of violin at Junior Guildhall, she co-founded the British Suzuki Institute and the European Suzuki Association and has taught privately and internationally in Europe, the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. She has been a longstanding external teacher at the Purcell School for Young Musicians and is a Diploma examiner for the ABRSM. Felicity is in frequent demand as a guest lecturer in a range of high profile institutions in Britain and abroad. She also lectures and gives masterclasses regularly at conferences and workshops worldwide and has been a key-note lecturer at ESTA Conference in the Ukraine and at The Suzuki Method Leaders’ Conference in Asilomar, California.Felicity also finds time for her practice as a qualified Alexander Technique teacher, and is renowned for her virtuosity as a spoon-player.
