About Stage Management 

This one-week in-person course will give you an introduction into the world of stage management and the skills required, including the art of blocking and cueing to music. 

Stage Management teams are at the centre of any production or event and without them, live performances would not be able to happen successfully. Skills required include communication, coordination and organisation.

Who is the course for?

Anyone over the age of 16 with an interest in production arts in theatre or related industries. If you love communicating, organising and being part of the central hub of a production or event, then this course is for you.

What can I expect?

During the week you will: 

  • Develop an understanding of the different roles within stage management
  • Develop basic prop making and prop sourcing skills 
  • Learn about the processes required in managing a production
  • Learn the art of blocking
  • Learn the art of cueing a drama production
  • Learn the art of cueing to music
  • Gain an understanding of the essential elements required in  stage management paperwork
  • Develop an understanding of the creative process

At the end of the week, you will use the skills you gained in a final staged project.

About the Course Tutor

This course is taught by experienced tutors from the School's Production Arts Department and is led by Gill Allen SFHEA, Guildhall's Head of Stage Management & Costume, and Programme Leader for BA Production Arts.

Gill trained in Stage Management and Technical Theatre at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and there followed a successful career as a professional Company & Stage Manager at theatres such as the Manchester Royal Exchange, Contact Theatre, Theatre Royal York and the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield. Gill then moved to work in television, where she worked on the BBC series Casualty.

Roles in education include Stage Management Tutor at LAMDA, Technical Courses & Academic Manager at RADA and Head of Technical Theatre at East 15. She joined Guildhall in 2014 as Head of Stage Management and Costume and in 2017, she became Programme Leader for Guildhall’s BA (Hons) Production Arts.

Gill has been responsible for writing a number of vocational training degrees, including a BA (Hons) Acting programme for the University of West London.
