About Essential Music Theory for ages 11-17 - Grade 5: Online
This one-week course is ideal if you are preparing for the ABRSM Grade 5 Music Theory exam and/or want to improve your knowledge of music theory. The course draws upon intuitive musical understanding and focuses on stave notation. The syllabus will also provide you with a foundation for more advanced music theory studies.
ABRSM music theory exams are now taking place online. Please check the ABRSM website for information and dates. (Please note exam entry is not included in the course fee and exam entries are not administered by Guildhall School.)
Who is the course for?
Anyone aged 11-17 with knowledge of ABRSM Grade 3 Music Theory, or the equivalent.
What can I expect?
The course will alternate between group sessions, independent working and 1:1 sessions led by the course tutor. For the 1:1 sessions you will be in your own breakout room to work on tasks, during which, the course tutor will join you to review the exercises.
Collective lessons are given in three broad topic areas:
- Time: understanding the notation of durations, metre and rhythm
- Pitch: understanding the notation of steps, intervals and patterns, tonality and harmony
- Sound and sense: understanding terminology, concepts, instruments and voices
Some of the activities will be online, but most exercises involve writing within the required publications and on manuscript paper.

Submitting work
You will need to submit work digitally in PDF format to be marked by the course tutor. If you do not have access to a scanner, we suggest using an app such as TurboScan (available for free on mobile devices), which will allow you to take photos that will be automatically converted to PDF.

Online Short Courses Requirements
All sessions will take place online using Zoom. A Zoom link will be sent to you in advance of the course start date with further instructions.
To participate in online classes you will need the following:
- An email address
- A reliable internet connection
- A laptop/tablet/desktop computer with a microphone and camera (most have these included)
- Speakers/headphones (the speakers in your laptop/tablet/computer should be sufficient)
- A fully updated web browser able to use the most up to date version of Zoom, or a fully updated Zoom client
