About Introduction to Game Audio: Online

This intensive three-day workshop will introduce you to all the major aspects of game audio through fun and practical tasks, which are centred around real game projects in Unreal Engine 4 (UE4). Working in a team of up to four people, each task will challenge your skills in a different area. You will create a game prototype, record and design ambient and gameplay SFX, compose interactive music, write simple code and implement all your assets in five different game projects.

Who is the course for?

Game audio enthusiasts with a passion for games, music and/or sound design.

What can I expect?

The course covers:

  • Introduction to game engines and UE4
  • Introduction to the different aspects and roles of game audio design
  • Creating an audio prototype for a hypothetical game
  • Basics of using UE4
  • Recording and designing ambient and gameplay SFX
  • Various audio implementation methods in UE4
  • Basics of interactive music (loops, stingers, triggers, transitions)
  • Programming audio basics
  • Practical tasks using five different games
  • Next steps for a career in game audio

Do I need anything for the course?

  • A computer powerful enough to run UE4. Please note that computers that only have an integrated graphics card might struggle running some of the exercises. An example of minimum specs is a 2016 MacBook Pro laptop with an integrated Iris Pro card.
  • Access to a DAW (e.g. Cubase, Logic Pro, Ableton, ProTools) and some experience using it.
  • The ability to record, edit and export audio and MIDI.
  • The ability to design a simple sound using a synthesiser (plug-in or hardware synth).
  • Basic knowledge of setting up and using a microphone (if you don’t have access to a microphone, you can use your phone to record simple sounds during the practical exercises).

Course Fee

£275

Eligibility

  • For everyone aged 18+.
  • Participants must have sufficient English language skills to cope with course demands.
