About Introduction to Video Projection Mapping: Online
This one-week online course will give you a unique opportunity to learn and develop the necessary skills to prepare and project video onto a 3D structure, using industry standard video projection software Resolume Arena 7.
Who is the course for?
- Anyone interested in video projection.
- An interest or experience in digital art, graphic design, video editing, technical theatre, gaming etc. would be an advantage.
What can I expect?
The course is technical as well as creative and will introduce you to the basic principles and techniques of digital video mapping:
- Preparing your digital content (file types, resolutions and codecs)
- Setting up your hardware (computers, projectors and real-world objects)
- Keystoning, image correction and distortions
- How to mask and map video to a 3D object
The course will include online teaching, self-directed time to explore tasks and group discussion.

A computer with the minimum spec to use Resolume VJ Software:

Online Short Courses Requirements
All sessions will take place online using Zoom. A Zoom link will be sent to you in advance of the course start date with further instructions.
To participate in online classes you will need the following:
- an email address
- a reliable internet connection
- a laptop/tablet/desktop computer with a microphone and camera (most have these included)
- speakers/headphones (the speakers in your laptop/tablet/computer should be sufficient)
- a fully updated web browser able to use the most up to date version of Zoom, or a fully updated Zoom client

About the Course Tutor
This course is taught by Dan Shorten and Richard Moores.
Richard is a technician and artist with a background in video and sound for live performance and installation. He has several years technical experience in systems design and programming on shows at the National Theatre, the Barbican Theatre and as a touring engineer with a variety of theatre and dance companies.
Dan teaches masterclasses in video mapping and video control software on Guildhall School’s production arts courses. He has been invited to teach as visiting lecture at the TEAK Theatre Academy Helsinki. He has worked on various video mapping projects including installations at Barbican Centre and at LUX Helsinki, and has been invited to present his work at BIPAF Busan, South Korea and Summer Arts Festival in California.
Dan is a multi-award winner director, designer and audio/visual specialist who works with various companies from all over the UK. During the last eight years he has worked on a series of five-star and sell-out shows that toured across the UK and overseas, including winning the 2007 Total Theatre Wildcard Award and a 2010 Fringe First Award. His work has been described in The Stage as “one of the most original examples of theatre around”. He has a burgeoning reputation and regularly collaborates with Icon, B-Arts and Kinetica, building audio/visual content for touring theatre and large-scale outdoor events.
