In Conversation with Jacob, Drama Student at Guildhall Young Artists King's Cross

It's been one year since Guildhall Young Artists (GYA) King's Cross opened — our music, drama and production arts centre for ages 5–18.

We caught up with Jacob, who has been on the Drama Course since the beginning, to find out what the past year has been like and his hopes for the next year.

You’ve been part of the Drama Course at GYA King’s Cross since it opened last year. How has it been for you? Have there been any highlights?

It's been awesome! I have made so many friends, who all love acting. The acting classes and teachers are diverse and inclusive, and allow everyone to be their best selves. Highlights have been: being included on the music production course, the performances and the trip to see Hamilton and meet the cast.

What made you want to attend GYA King’s Cross?

I want to progress with my acting skills, with my longer term aim being to work in movies, either as an actor or as a director.

Classes start from 9am on Saturdays during term time. How is that for you? Do you have far to travel?

I travel from Surrey, which is a train, tube and short walk. I love King's Cross and Camden as an area and we sometimes hang out after our classes. It's an early start, but it's something I am passionate about and I have a great group of friends at GYA.

What’s the best thing about being at GYA King’s Cross?

Acting with such a diverse and inclusive group of teachers and students. We are all different whist sharing the same energy and passion for acting.

Do you have any advice for anyone wanting to attend, but might be feeling a little bit nervous?

To quote Nike, 'Just do it!'

It was King’s Cross first birthday on 24 September, so in the spirit of birthdays and making a wish, you have one wish for the next year. What would this be? This can be anything.

To join an acting and modelling agency.

Thank you Jacob, it's been great to hear all about your experience. Find out more about the Drama Course at GYA King's Cross at gsmd.ac.uk/kings-cross/drama. New students welcome at anytime and free taster sessions available.
