English Language Entry Criteria
English Language Entry Criteria
The language of instruction is English and it is vital that all students have a good command of the language. In addition, students requiring a student visa will need to meet the Home Office's minimum requirements in reading, writing, speaking and listening.
If you are required to sit an English test, the deadline to provide the School with evidence of meeting the English language entry requirement is 30 April (or mid-June for offers made after early April).
English Language Tests
We accept the following tests for entry to the school. Our preferred tests are those approved by the Home Office, as listed in bold below.
- IELTS Academic for UKVI
- Trinity College London (ISE II or ISE III)
- Pearson PTE Academic UKVI
- LanguageCert International ESOL SELT exam - B2. or above, (Listening, Reading, Writing & Speaking)

Students will usually be exempted from English language testing if they can evidence that they:

Please note: we reserve the right to request an external English test from any prospective student. This is to ensure that students’ English skills meet the required standard to access their chosen programme of study.
Please send your admissions coordinator a scan of your results certificate or reference number as soon as you receive passing results.
If you have taken one of the accepted tests but your certificate is dated more than two years before the start of the course, it will not be accepted and you must re-sit one of the approved tests.
You are strongly recommended to begin studying towards the required standard as soon as you decide to apply to Guildhall School. If you are offered a place with an English language test as a condition of entry, you must submit your test results by the deadline or your offer may be withdrawn.
Test results can often take several weeks to be released, so you must plan and book your test well in advance.
