Norfolk County Youth Orchestra
Norfolk's premier youth orchestra provides rehearsal and performance opportunities for musicians aged 4–18 of all levels from Grades 1 to 8+. Managed by Guildhall Young Artists Norwich.

We welcome young musicians to play in our orchestra
Within Norfolk County Youth Orchestra (NCYO) we have three groups for young musicians playing at different levels, with courses taking place during spring and autumn half-term, usually over a period of four to five days.
Our young musicians:
- Work with industry professionals
- Rehearse with like-minded peers
- Build confidence
- Develop performance skills
- Take part in public performances
Established in 1959, NCYO is the top orchestra for young musicians in Norfolk, giving them the opportunity to develop their skills. NCYO is funded by The Friends of Norfolk County Youth Orchestra, an independent charity which provides financial support through bursaries, to support young musicians who want to attend an NCYO course.

We have three groups for young musicians aged 4–18 at various stages of their development. There are two courses per year for each of these groups.
A group for students Grades 1–3 on any orchestral instrument. Rehearsals take place for half days on afternoons during NCYO’s courses with a pre-concert performance on Thursday evening as well as the main NCYO concert. Students focus on the foundational skills needed to be part of an orchestra in a fun and supportive environment as well as being able to be part of the bigger NCYO orchestra with students right up to Grade 8+.

Support available
Financial support is available for some students from low-income families thanks to bursaries provided with support from the Friends of Norfolk County Youth Orchestra.
NCYO bursaries are means tested and open to students who can demonstrate real financial need.
Bursaries are awarded on a means-tested basis, and any student living in a household with a residual income of less that £60,000 may apply. The residual household income is the total gross taxable income from the household, reducing that by the amount of Private Pension Plans, AVC’s, or other taxable allowances which is then further reduced by £1,130 for each child/student in the household who are financially dependent on the family.
To apply for a bursary for NCYO, simply fill out our application form and tick the relevant box in the finance and fees section.
If you qualify for a NYCO bursary, you can also get 30% off the course fees for one or more siblings who join any of our courses.
The Friends of Norfolk County Youth Orchestra is an independent charity. It was set up to foster and develop musical skills and opportunities for all Norfolk County Youth Orchestra players – especially those in greatest need of support.
It has also been the main source of financial support for the orchestra since 2019, heavily subsidising costs and supporting individual students with a bursary scheme.
Run by a group of volunteer trustees, any funds raised go directly to helping young musicians who would otherwise be unable to continue their passion and progress within music.
The Friends are vital and without them the NCYO would not be viable which is why the trust continues to seek support and donations to continue its work.
Support can come in many ways. It may be a small, personal donation or a business partnership. We are also keen to engage with organisations who are passionate about music and children’s development and who might be interested in running their own Friends fund-raising event or linking their brand with us.
