About Discovery Music Course

For ages 7 – 11 (School Years 3,4,5 & 6).

Our Discovery Music Course offers young musicians an inspiring introduction to a wide variety of music styles and genres. Tailored to each student’s age and musical experience, the course provides and engaging and supportive environment where creativity and collaboration are at the heart of every session.

Each week students take part in two sessions:

Discovery Skills

  • In these sessions students join a group based on their instrument – Strings, Wind, Brass, Percussion, or Guitar. Focused on developing technique and instrumental confidence this session will support students in building a strong musical foundation.

Discovery Ensemble or Discovery Choir

  • Students playing at Grade 2 level or above, join the Discovery Ensemble, where they explore a diverse repertoire and gain experience playing in a mixed instrument group. These sessions focus on ensemble skills, interpretation and reading notation.
  • Beginner to Grade 1 students take part in the Discovery Choir, where they will develop core musicality, listening and ensemble skills through singing, in a fun and inclusive setting.

As confidence and instrument skill levels develop, students may be invited to progress to the Discovery Ensemble during the academic year on advice from GYA King’s Cross staff.

We welcome all students who have started learning an instrument – with no audition required. For those who haven’t yet begun, we offer a tailored series of one-to-one classes to prepare them for the course.

Please note that while Guildhall Young Artists Kings Cross offers tuition on a variety of instruments, we are unable to accommodate piano as a first instrument of study.

The Discovery Music Course is ideal for

  • Beginners looking to build music confidence
  • Young players eager to make music with like-minded friends
  • Students thinking about taking their musical journey further.

At Guildhall Young Artists, creativity, teamwork and performance are central to our ethos. Students will have the chance to participate in centre-wide performance opportunities, both at our King’s Cross venue and beyond.

Classes run from 9am to 11am, providing students with 1 hour and 45 minutes of lesson time, including a 15-minute break.

Join us for a joyful and high-quality musical programme that sets the stage for a lifelong love of music.
