Peter Longworth

Biography

Described as “dazzlingly atmospheric” (Glasgow Herald), Peter Longworth’s music has been performed throughout the UK and Europe, as well as in Japan and North America. Ensembles who have commissioned his work include the London Mozart Players, the Edinburgh Quartet, the Hebrides Ensemble, and the National Youth Orchestras of Scotland, whilst his orchestral piece In the Golden Shadows of Dawn was recorded by the Brno Philharmonic for Ablaze Records in 2018.

An alumnus of the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s Young Composers Programme and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra’s Composers' Hub, Peter studied composition at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Matthew King, and at the Royal College of Music with Mark-Anthony Turnage. His work often draws on his strong affinity with Italian culture for inspiration, resulting in pieces such as the trumpet quartet, Days of Bells and Flying Creatures which was described as a “unique, creative, and welcome addition to the repertoire” by the International Trumpet Guild Journal.  Upcoming performances include the premiere of his orchestral piece Bergamasca by the Orchestra of Opera North, and of his Nocturne (with rain and poplars) by the award-winning guitarist, Sasha Savaloni.

In addition to his work as a composer, Peter is the music typesetter for Warwick Music Publishing and principal conductor of the Guildhall Session Orchestra. Passionate about music education, he has taught at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama since 2018 and, during 2021, gave presentations on his music to the Cheltenham Italian Society, and to students at the Missouri University of Science and Technology.
