Tia Alexandrou (Design Realisation)

What's been your highlight during your time at Guildhall?

It has been the amazing experiences of being a part of a production team during my second year on the course. I was able to work on numerous shows, bringing the designs to life as a maker in the teams. One of the most memorable out of these experiences would be when I was given the chance to create 2 masks inspired by roman god statues for Autumn Opera Scenes. I did not have much experience in clay sculpting and mask making before this, so this was an incredible learning experience, where I got to develop these skills. The faith in my abilities to make this prop, from my coordinator, lecturers and designer, helped me to work on this to the best of my ability and build my confidence through the process!

What other passions and projects have you enjoyed exploring during your time at Guildhall?

I have enjoyed being given the time to work on personal projects throughout my time on this course, as it has given me access to good materials and tools to develop my own passions and creative ideas. For example, in my second year of study, I used some personal project time to create a wardrobe inspired by the one in Narnia and a dollhouse prop.

What's something you've learned that you feel will help you when you graduate?

When working on productions in Guildhall, we work alongside a team in our own creative department (scenic, props or construction) and then also alongside a wider production team with lots of different people. I feel that through working on these shows I have learnt how the different departments within a production work with each other to put together a show. This experience has taught me ways to communicate and liaise with other departments, and also how to manage the stress that this may bring, in a professional manner. I feel that the skills of communication and getting along with a team is a crucial part of working in the industry, so is something that will help me to get work and build my career after graduation.

What are you most interested in working in after you graduate?

I am most interested in working as a prop maker, model maker and scenic artist. These fields excite me the most and is where I feel my work shines. I hope to work in the theatre and film industries but am also open to and excited to look into other fields such as advertisement and exhibitions too.
