Monica Dolan wins ‘Best Actress in a Supporting Role’ award at 2019 Olivier Awards

Congratulations to alumna Monica Dolan (Acting, 1992) who picked up the ‘Best Actress in a Supporting Role’ award at this year’s Olivier Awards for her performance in All About Eve at the Noël Coward Theatre, which also starred Guildhall alumna Lily James (Acting, 2010).

Monica Dolan was nominated in the ‘Outstanding Achievement in Affiliate Theatre’ category at last year’s Olivier Awards for The B*easts, a play written by and starring the BAFTA-winning actress.

The Olivier Awards have celebrated the very best in British theatre since 1976, with the winners of this year’s awards announced at a ceremony on Sunday 7 April at the Royal Albert Hall.

Also among this year’s winners was featuring Njabulo Madlala (Vocal Studies, 2009), part of the ensemble of Porgy and Bess who won ‘Outstanding Achievement in Opera’.

A number of Guildhall alumni were among the final nominees.

Natasha Gordon (Acting, 1999) saw her debut play Nine Night nominated for ‘Best New Comedy’. Marcello Cruz (Acting, 2016) starred in Wider Earth, nominated in the ‘Best Entertainment & Family’ category.

Neil Austin (Technical Theatre, 1992) was nominated in the ‘Best Lighting Design’ category for his work on Company.

Eileen Atkins’ (Acting, 1953) performance in The Height of the Storm saw her nominated in the ‘Best Actress’ category. Simon Russell Beale (Acting, 1983) and Ben Miles (Acting, 1988) were nominated alongside The Lehman Trilogy co-star Adam Godley in the ‘Best Actor’ category.

Tom Curran (Composition, 2014) was nominated alongside Toby Marlow, Lucy Moss, and Joe Beighton in the ‘Outstanding Achievement in Music’ category for Six original score, orchestration and vocal arrangements.

Roderick Williams (Opera Studies, 1995) and David Butt Philip were nominated in the ‘Outstanding Achievement in Opera’ category for their performances in War Requiem.
