In conversation with Rianne who has completed two writing short courses

Here at Guildhall School, as well as our higher education provision, we also offer short courses and summer schools throughout the year for all ages and levels. We spoke to Rianne about her experience on Writing for Screen: Level 1 and Writing for Screen: Level 2 - both taught by Emma Dennis-Edwards.
Tell us about you
I currently work in retail, but I am eager to get into the film and TV industry. I mainly write (or at least try to) in my spare time. I typically write fantasy and comedy, often a blend of both. I enjoy reading as well and usually have about two books on rotation.
What did you enjoy about the courses?
I most enjoyed meeting other like-minded writers. The best part of the course was hearing our pieces read by actors. Being able to hear your story come to life is honestly amazing. I also enjoyed hearing my fellow classmate’s pieces too. Everyone wrote such different but incredibly engaging pieces, I’m super excited to hear about the development of everyone’s writing.
There were about 12 of us on the course, some of us have stayed in contact arranging to meet up. It’s this relationship that I am really grateful for - to be able to connect with other writers is something I’ve been craving.
How have you used your skills since your last course?
I’ve been writing; I should do more, but I’m trying to stay consistent, which is something that I learned on the course; the importance of creating a writing routine and sticking to it. Also just writing without the pressure of perfection.
What are your plans for the future and how do you intend to use your writing skills?
Currently, I am trying to edit my pilot and then I would like to try and get an agent. I do hope that one day my show Dimensions will get made - that’s the ultimate goal. Baby steps, I guess. I’ll get there one day!
What would you say to people considering Guildhall School Short Courses in writing?
I would recommend the courses! Emma is wonderful, it was great to gain insight into the industry from her. Taking the course allowed me to have a set time every week dedicated to writing which is difficult when working full time. So, if you’re someone who struggles to find the time or create a balance then this is perfect for you!
Thank you to Rianne for taking the time to speak to us. Our Autumn Evening Courses are currently open for bookings with courses in writing, drama, music and more!
