Biography & Pure profile
Ben studied with Julian Anderson, Cassandra Miller and Malcolm Singer at Guildhall School of Music & Drama as an undergraduate (first-class honours). He then continued studies with Anderson at the School, completing his master’s with distinction in 2024 and receiving the Tracey Chadwell Memorial Prize (2023), Jane Manning – Anthony Payne Award (2024) and Marjorie & Dorothy Whyte Memorial Award (2024). In 2023, he attended the Académie Ravel in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, France, where he was mentored by Michael Jarrell and Ramon Lazkano. Before Guildhall, he studied with David Stowell at GYAN as a Leverhulme Arts Scholar, and was mentored by Tom Coult as a member of the Britten Sinfonia Academy.
His works have recently premiered at venues and institutions including the Barbican Hall, Carnegie Hall, The Place (London), Musikene (San Sebastián), Milton Court Concert Hall, The Courtauld Gallery and the King's Lynn Festival. He has written for ensembles including EXAUDI Vocal Ensemble, the Gildas and Ligeti Quartets, PlusMinus Ensemble, line upon line percussion, the Guildhall Session and Symphony Orchestras, and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, working with conductors including Jack Sheen, Jonathan Stockhammer, Sir Antonio Pappano, Toby Thatcher and Alphonse Cemin.
Ben grew up in Essex and Norwich. He attended City of Norwich School (host to GYAN), where he has since returned to give composition workshops.
