Event information

Gil Evans’ New Bottle, Old Wine is the inspiration for this programme presented by Guildhall Big Band directed by pianist, composer, and arranger Ivo Neame. Evans’ knack for imbuing a distinctly modern ‘cool’ in his arrangements of well-loved jazz classics turned familiar tunes into trailblazing beacons of progressive jazz. Picking up from where Miles Ahead had left off, Old Bottle, New Wine again proves that, with the careful and sophisticated treatment and the most sensitive musicality, the finest compositions and arrangements just keep getting better with age.

Ivo Neame is an award-winning pianist and composer. In addition to leading his own bands, he has featured in several of European jazz’s most forward-looking groups including Phronesis and the Marius Neset Quintet. He regularly performs at jazz festivals worldwide, collaborating with ensembles as diverse as the Frankfurt Radio Big Band and the London Sinfonietta. Ivo studied at the Royal Academy of Music and, since leaving in 2003, he has performed and recorded with highly esteemed musicians such as Hermeto Pascoal, David Binney and Kenny Wheeler.
