Biography & Pure profile

Philip began his studies at the Royal Northern College of Music where he had recorded a premiere of Edwin Roxburgh’s oboe trio – Shadow Play, with the renowned oboist Paul Goodey. Whilst at the RNCM Philip won numerous prizes including the Cronshaw Lancaster Prize for Wind, Evelyn Rothwell Oboe Prize and a Henry Wood Scholarship alongside performing various concertos with the school's various orchestras. 

Chamber music is at the core of his career and with this, Philip is a tutor on courses including the Malvern Winds, Dartington International Festival and The Music Summer School and Festival. As a member of the award-winning Atéa Wind Quintet, Philip has toured extensively around Europe and Japan. The group are the Associate Ensemble in Residence at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire where Philip is also a guest oboe tutor. The Quintet were previously Artists in Residence at the Purcell School and double prize winners in the 2015 Carl Nielsen International Chamber Music Competition and are very thankful for the support of the Tunnell Trust, Live Music Now and the Kirkman Concert Society schemes, with whom they gave their Wigmore debut in 2015. 


Philip is also a member of the award-winning ‘Riot Ensemble’ whose focus is new music which has taken him across the UK around Europe. Philip has recently worked with orchestras such as the Lapland Chamber Orchestra (Finland), Orchestra of Opera North, Irish National Symphony Orchestra, RTÉ Concert Orchestra, Turku Philharmonic (Finland) Liverpool Philharmonic, Hallé Orchestra, Birmingham Contemporary Music Ensemble and London Mozart Players.
