The Songs of Edouard van Cleeff
A collaboration between the Guildhall School and University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (mdw), led by Marc Verter.
This captivating programme brings to light the music of the uncovered French Jewish composer Edouard van Cleeff, whose works were banned by the Nazis. A rising star in France during the 1920s and 30s, van Cleeff was forced to go into hiding after the Nazi occupation, abandoning his musical career. His compositions disappeared from public memory after World War II - until now. Marc Verter has been researching and reviving his songs as part of an exciting collaboration between Guildhall School and the Exilarte Centre at Vienna University.
Alongside van Cleeff’s rediscovered music, this programme will also showcase compositions by his French contemporaries, as well as other composers who faced Nazi persecution, including Walter Arlen, Julius Bürger, Erich Korngold, Erich Zeisl and Hans Gal.
