Biography & Pure profile
What has been your highlight during your time at Guildhall?
I thoroughly enjoyed working as a Prop-Maker on Mansfield Park. This production involved lots of problem-solving and time pressured working as we made four candelabras, ornate mirrors, and Georgian frames from scratch. At first this seemed like an overwhelming task, however I worked with so many talented and hard-working people and I was amazed at how much we achieved in just five weeks. It was really rewarding watching the final production and seeing all our efforts come together.
What’s been your highlight in the industry?
As part of my course, I have had the opportunity to work with professional designers and freelancers, through whom I have been provided with so many great experiences working in the industry. My highlight would be assisting with painting the Bread and Roses Theatre stage for Glastonbury Festival. Besides giving me experience on a professional project, this gave me an insight into the breadth of job opportunities and industries available to me in Design Realisation.
What other passions and projects have you enjoyed exploring during Guildhall?
At Guildhall, we are given chances outside of production work to explore specific areas that we are passionate about. For my personal project, I took on the task of recreating the Durham Cathedral Sanctuary Ring in resin, as mould making is an area of prop making that I really enjoy. I developed my skills in sculpture, as well as learning a new skill by experimenting with cold casting using metallic powder to create a realistic metal finish.
Outside of the workshop, designing and producing posters for various Guildhall student events while at Guildhall also meant I was able to develop my graphic design skills, while helping others.
What’s something you’ve learned that you feel will help you when you graduate?
Seeing first-hand the interplay between departments and team members of a theatre crew at Guildhall, one of my key takeaways has been to recognise the importance of teamwork and communication within a successful production team. During my second year, I was given the opportunity to spend six weeks in the Costume department, where my experiences and skills from DR were an asset to the team. For example, I was tasked to make a pregnant belly as part of one costume and experience in creating 3D structures helped me to produce a piece out of boning to the required specification. Furthermore, an understanding and appreciation of how other departments work will help me after graduating when collaborating in the future. Guildhall has helped me to greatly expand my knowledge and skills in different media, which I will take forward with me when I start working in the industry.
What are you most interested in working in after you graduate?
I am most interested in working as a Prop-Maker or Scenic Artist and am open to exploring various industries such as: Theatre, Opera, Film, TV, Theme Parks, Live Events, Window Displays and Museums.
