In Conversation with Alberte: Electronic & Produced Music alumna and six-time acting short course participant

Alberte will graduate from a postgraduate in Electronic & Produced Music this month, after three years of study. During that time, she has also participated in six acting short courses, most recently attending a two-week Acting Summer School in July. We caught up with Alberte to hear all about her experience with Guildhall and her interest in both music and drama. 

Hi Alberte! You are about to graduate from a postgraduate in Electronic & Produced Music, congratulations! How has the experience been for you?

It has been amazing! As I studied an extended Master’s in Composition, I have had the great pleasure of spending three years at Guildhall School of Music & Drama. I have been able to participate in such a wide variety of events and opportunities, which have been simultaneously fun and educational. I’ve had the opportunity to take part in masterclasses with Oscar-winning composers, I’ve conducted a brass band marching in the Lady Mayor’s Show, and put on various concerts of different genres. I have met so many fantastic peers and had the privilege of an expert education from my amazing tutors.

What do your next steps in music look like for you?

I have recently been chosen as a Junior Fellow at Guildhall, so I’ll be staying on for another year! During my fellowship, I get to run projects for the Electronic & Produced Music faculty, so I have a couple of exciting things lined up for that. I will also be preparing myself for a full-time career as an artist and that involves releasing music, finding job opportunities, and perhaps starting to look at some agencies!

Can you tell us a little bit about your background and why you decided to do a postgraduate in Electronic & Produced Music at Guildhall?

I have been composing and producing music since I was a teenager. I have an undergraduate degree in Jazz Vocals, but during my studies I tended to lean more towards the production and composing side of things. I love performing and singing live, but creating music is my calling. I decided to do my Master’s at Guildhall because here you are able to work on a very broad spectrum of genres and projects. Since I produce pop and electronic dance music, as well as compose film and orchestral music, Guildhall seemed like the perfect place for me.

You’ve participated in six acting short courses with us during this time, the last of which was the Acting Summer School in July. What was your reason for doing these?

I have always been fond of acting and performing, but until three years ago, I hadn’t taken any proper acting classes. Being at one of the best drama schools in the world (and music schools, of course), and seeing that there were short courses accessible to all levels of experience, I thought, this is an opportunity I cannot miss out on! All of the courses have been great fun, and the teachers and participants are inspiring.

I’ve also been using a lot of the acting techniques that I have learnt in relation to my music performance. I had a small concert in Milton Court last year, and just the simple practice of allowing myself to take up space and being comfortable during silences helped ground me.

How was your experience on these courses? Do you have any highlights?

All of the courses have been absolutely fantastic. I would say that the main highlight has been the tutors, who have been welcoming and supportive throughout.

What would you say to someone who's thinking of doing a Guildhall Short Course but isn't sure?

I would say just do it! You will most likely be met by a very like-minded community and learn the techniques to mastering the skills you always wanted to learn. And if you’re not sure because you’re nervous or scared to do it, don’t worry, most of us are too. 

How do you make time for yourself, especially when you are so busy?

I do my best to walk a lot and read! But honestly, one of my favourite ways to relax is by watching reality TV! 

Have you used any skills from the acting courses so far?

Yes, most of the skills that we learn at the short courses are incredibly useful not only in acting but also in everyday life. Speaking clearly, having good posture, and, perhaps most importantly, daring to make mistakes, are some of the skills I’m taking with me — not only onto the stage, but also into my private life.

Lastly, a couple of fun questions... How are you spending the rest of your summer?

Now that I’m done with the two-week acting course (which was amazing by the way!), I will be going to Scandinavia to visit my relatives. I’m looking forward to a month of family dinners, reading and swimming in ridiculously cold water.

Favourite theatre show or song to listen to?

This has been the trickiest question to answer! I can’t choose just one favourite, but ‘Hamilton’ is definitely up there! I love the way it merges hip-hop and classic show-tunes. Another highlight was ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream,’ directed by Emily Lim at the Globe, which I recently watched and found gloriously silly!
