Biography

Having studied in London at Westminster School and The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Charles has had the privilege to be guided by some of the most distinguished and acclaimed specialists and pedagogues in the world of violin performance and chamber music. At the Guildhall, his work with violinist David Takeno as well as with musicologist, writer and broadcaster Hans Keller propelled him into performing career centred around chamber music, but also including solo playing and leading orchestras. His appointment to resident artist at the University of York in 1986 with the Mistry String Quartet provided the perfect backdrop to develop his career as a performing artist.

Joining the celebrated Chilingirian Quartet in 1992 Charles had the fortune to perform in over 50 countries at important venues worldwide, collaborating with many distinguished artists in performances of the great masterpieces of the repertoire, both historic as well as new commissions by artists including John Tavener, Robert Saxton, and Hugh Wood. Highly acclaimed recordings for Chandos, Hyperion, Decca and EMI/Virgin have been an important part of his work with the Chilingirian as has the focus on teaching through international masterclasses and their residence at The Royal College of Music, London and at West Dean in Sussex.

Charles has also been a principal member of the London Chamber Orchestra since 2000 with performances throughout Europe and the Far East as well as invitations to perform at high-profile royal events such as Queen Elizabeth II’s private birthday celebrations and the royal wedding of 2011. The orchestra has also been a strong contributor to the world of education through its Music Junction programme, bringing high quality musical experience to school-age students from a broad range of backgrounds.

Charles has had the honour of being Head of Strings at The Purcell School since 2008 where he enjoys the great responsibility of nurturing some of the finest talent form all around the world, supported by a team of highly experienced international artists and pedagogues.
