Biography

Marilyn Rees graduated with a BMus(Hons) from Cardiff University before embarking on Post Graduate and Opera Course studies at the RCM where she won numerous prizes.

During this time she made her professional debut with Kent Opera at the Aldeburgh festival in the Beggar’s Opera.

She has worked extensively in recital and oratorio, given many broadcasts for radio and television and toured Japan, USA and Europe.

Roles have included Susanna, Queen of the Night, Zerbinetta, Poppea and much of the Bel Canto repertoire. She sang with the Bayreuther Festspiele for over ten years and also with the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

Her special interest in vocal pedagogy led her to establish herself as a full time singing teacher in 1996 when she also joined the Vocal Faculty at the RWCMD. Her holistic approach provides firm technical grounding for young singers and continued refinement for established artists.

Marilyn is now an acclaimed and sought-after teacher and vocal consultant with a thriving private teaching studio of international clients in London and Cardiff. Her many successful students are performing with major opera companies and are successful in competitions.

Marilyn is a frequent examiner and adjudicator at national and international competitions and presents regular workshops on vocal technique and performance. She is currently a member of the Vocal faculty at the Guildhall School, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Cardiff University and is Head of singing at Junior Guildhall.
