About Discovery Music & Drama Course

For ages 7–11 (School Years 3,4,5 & 6).

Our Discovery Music & Drama Course offers young people the opportunity to experience our Discovery Music and Discovery Drama programmes combined. With music classes tailored to each student’s age and musical experience, and a drama class nurturing collaboration and creativity, students will take part in three sessions every week.

Each week students take part in three sessions:

Session 1 - Discovery Music Skills

  • In these sessions students join a group based on their instrument – Strings, Wind, Brass, Percussion, or Guitar. Focused on developing technique and instrumental confidence this session will support students in building a strong musical foundation.

Session 2 - Discovery Ensemble or Discovery Progression

  • Students playing at Grade 2 level or above, join the Discovery Ensemble, where they explore a diverse repertoire and gain experience playing in a mixed instrument group. These sessions focus on ensemble skills, interpretation and reading notation.
  • Students working towards Grade 2 level students take part in Discovery Progression, where they will participate in a ‘Musical Awareness’ class developing musicianship and theory, and also take part in a small group ‘Instrument Tutorial’ (3-to-4 students per group)

As confidence and instrument skill levels develop, students may be invited to progress to the Discovery Ensemble during the academic year on advice from GYA King’s Cross staff.

Session 3 – Discovery Drama

  • Exploring vocal and physical movement exercises, drama games, improvisation and text, this engaging class will build confidence, communication and social skills, support self-expression and unleash creativity.

Please note;

We welcome all students who have started learning an instrument, with no audition required. To be able to enrol on the Discovery Music Course we require students to be playing at a Grade 1 - 2 level. If Grades have not been taken, this is the equivalent of one-years regular individual tuition.

For those who haven’t yet begun playing their instrument, or at the start of their music journey we offer a tailored series of one-to-one classes to prepare them for the course.

For those who haven’t yet begun playing their instrument, or at the start of their music journey we offer a tailored series of one-to-one classes to prepare them for the course (subject to availability).
