Biography

Jo Gibson is Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Guildhall School, working on the AHRC-funded project entitled: ‘Music for social impact: Practitioners’ contexts, work and beliefs’ (PI: John Sloboda).

Jo obtained her BMus degree at The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, MMus in Leadership at Guildhall School and PhD in Community Music at York St John University. She is affiliated to The International Centre for Community Music.

As a practitioner-researcher in the field of community music, Jo’s own practice research focusses on the micro-acts of making - and in particular the community musician’s role in music-making with participants - for understanding at micro, mezzo and macro levels. This includes consideration of co-creation in participatory music-making practices, the interrelationship between facilitator and participant and community music as a working towards cultural democracy. As a community musician, Jo has led music-making projects across the education sector, in community settings and for arts organisations.
