Research Works: Queering the Conservatoire – Beyond the diversity checklist (Session 1)

Singer

Research, ResearchWorks

Three doctoral researchers, Nick Bonadies, Sarah McCabe and Imogen Flower, brazenly launch the entirely unofficial Queer Performance department, making the case for a Queer Conservatoire.

In the first of two sessions, the presenters unpick some of the queer strands running through their varied research projects, threading them together with provocative questions about approaches to queerness within the hallowed halls of conservatoires and ‘high art’ institutions. They apply a critical lens to the issues of unobserved privilege, gatekeeping and tokenism as they pertain to queer performance (and performers) in these spaces, in the hope that this critique might galvanise genuine institutional support for systemic change extending throughout the arts world.
