About Sound Design for Theatre
This one-week in-person hands-on course will introduce you to the practical, creative and technological aspects of sound design and management for the stage.
Who is the course for?
Anyone with an interest in sound, its manipulation and use in a theatrical or narrative context.
What can I expect?
The course covers the purpose of sound within theatre and roles within this (e.g. Sound Designer, Principal Sound Engineer and Sound Operator), as well as an introduction to relevant software and equipment:
- Software: QLab and Pro Tools
- Equipment: mics, cables, desks, speakers, computers and interfaces
- FX recording and editing
- Aspects of Sound Design: atmospheres, spot FX and reinforcement

Eligibility
- For everyone aged 16+.
- Participants must have sufficient English language skills to cope with course demands.

Accommodation is located in Sundial Court, the School's student halls of residence. Rooms will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Should we not be able to facilitate your booking, you will be notified via email and a full refund will be issued.
About the Course Tutor
The course is taught by Guildhall School Production Arts Lecturer Grant Shalks.
Grant began his career as a recording engineer and composer in 1999 and has composed soundtracks for theatre and video games. Clients include IBM, Stagecoach and Clockwork Games.
He has been lecturing in all aspects of sound including recording, composing and sound design since 2004. In addition to his role at Guildhall School, he has also lectured on the University of West London courses Creative Sound and Audio Post Production.
He is currently working on developing composition and sound design for a comedy / horror podcast.
