Biography & Pure profile
Specialist Area: Lighting Design, Composition
What's been your highlight during your time at Guildhall?
The highlight for me has to be when on tour with a puppet show called Georgie and Gadget, to which I’d composed the music for. At one of the venues we had 2 young audience members watching it for a 2nd time who ended up singing along to all of the songs, even the sad song, which felt incredibly gratifying and I would deem one of the best compliments a composer can receive.
I also really enjoyed working on Unearthed, a circus show we made in France. I liked the opportunity to work in a different environment and country and it opened me up to the world of dance and circus that I would really like to work with more in the future!
What's been your highlight in the industry?
Just before coming to Guildhall, I got to work on a play in the West End called Anna X as the lighting apprentice. It was an excellent precursor to the MA CTPD course itself as I saw in real life a production team working incredibly collaboratively together, and the skills required for that. Shadowing LD Jessica Hung Han Yun also showed me what a designer in action looks like which has really inspired and helped me when in tech for shows I’ve done since.
What other passions and projects have you enjoyed exploring during your time at Guildhall?
At the beginning of the summer term, I got to try out video editing and design for a week. I had already had experience with this during my Bachelor’s degree but haven’t really gone back to it since moving into lighting so it was really nice to go back to it and realise that I still enjoy it and have the skills to do so.
What's something you've learned that you feel will help you when you graduate?
The importance of clear communication, finding joy in the process, and knowing when to defend my creative decisions and when to let them go. It’s not as if these are new concepts to me, but this course has helped me practice and improve these skills. It has also helped me realise that these are hard skills that are forever developing and that I will probably never perfect. But neither will anyone else I work with.
What area are you most interested in working in after you graduate?
I would really like to focus my work as both a lighting designer and composer internationally with the hopes to relocate as well. I’m particularly interested in working further in dance, musical theatre, and children’s theatre, but of course keen to try anything. I’m also eager to try and create some installation art through both my mediums.
