Alex Lane

Biography

After moving to London to study drums at Drumtech (now The British and Irish Modern Music Institute, BIMM) Alex went on to gain a BSc in Audio engineering/Sound design at Hertfordshire University.

Now residing in the South West he divides his time between session drummer, drum tuition, mixing records and tutoring in Music Technology.

Alex is Co-Founder of Bear Hug recordings, a boutique recording duo who have a mobile recording set-up and offer tailored recording and mixing services for artists across the UK.

Bear Hug also composes music for TV and Library. They have had music featured on the BBC and Channel 4, worked with labels and libraries such as Ninja Tune and Diynamic Music, as well as many indie projects and games.

Currently playing drums for Iroquois and Lost In The Riots, Alex also produces Electronica under the Pseudonym I I I I and teaches drums in local schools and privately.

Alex provides drum students a comprehensive contemporary syllabus combining his own programme with that of the Rock School grade material and of course any material they themselves are eager to learn. Students will cover topics such as, Musicianship, Sight Reading, Techniques and Improvisation.

Alex’s drumming influences are Abe Cunningham (Deftones), Dennis Elliott (Foreigner), Aaron Spears (Usher), Steve Smith (Journey), Jordan Hastings (Alexisonfire). His favourite styles of music to play are Rock, Post Rock, Math Rock, Hip-Hop, Electronica and Funk/Soul.
Using the latest technology in the Mac Suite at Richard Huish College, Alex Lane teaches students at GYA Taunton how to work with and create music using Logic Pro, a complete professional recording studio on a Mac computer.

Designed especially for GYA Taunton students aged 11 – 18, Alex’s Music Production course gives students knowledge and experience of music production theory and practice in any musical style.  The course is flexible in its approach and outlook which means that students can do the course whether they have little or no prior experience of music technology as well as those with experience of music technology.

The course is planned as a series of projects designed to introduce various aspects of music technology and develop a progressive skillset. Examples include:

• Computer based composition (electronic pieces or pieces for instruments and tape)
• Sound design – creating sound effects from concrete sounds / students’ instruments to tell a story or enhance video
• Ambient or multitrack recording(s) of orchestra / choir / various small ensembles
• Multitrack recordings of GYA pop groups
• DJing skills

Students may have the opportunity to showcase compositions / sound design at GYA Taunton end of term concerts.

There are currently 4 group classes available in Music Production at GYA Taunton, and individual lessons are also available when taken alongside a programme of group workshops.
