Exploring mind-reading during improvisation involving humans and AI

A unique evening where pioneering research meets the spontaneity of live classical improvisations is hosted by the Centre for Creative Performance & Classical Improvisation together with the research department at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. In collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Studies (MPIEA), the event features one of its directors, concert pianist and cognitive neuroscientist Professor Fredrik Ullén, along with concert pianist, researcher, and improviser Professor David Dolan, and composer and AI music programmer Associate Professor Oded Ben-Tal.

The programme combines live performance and research-led discussion. It features duo and trio piano improvisations, involving human musicians in dialogue with (and without) AI-inspired systems. The evening also includes a lecture by Professor Fredrik Ullén on past, current, and future research projects exploring the real-time creative process in music-making and musical mind-reading.

A round-table discussion will follow, bringing together leading voices across music, performance research, and cognitive neuroscience to explore how we invent, listen, and respond in real time. The round-table will be followed by an audience Q&A.

In addition to Professor Fredrik Ullén, Oded Ben-Tal, and David Dolan, the round-table panel will include:
