We chatted to Olivia about her experience on the course.

What music experience did you have before joining GYA Online?

I had completed all the ABRSM violin grades and have been studying at the Royal Irish Academy of Music. I have been a member of youth orchestras and various chamber ensembles.

I did a Guildhall School online short course on film music composition in 2023 and enjoyed it a lot. After that, I was looking for more opportunities to expand my horizons and came across this course.

How have you found the course?

This course has given me a challenge, to push myself and work harder than ever before, in order to maintain the high level that is expected. The theory and history classes provide me with a completely new perspective on music, allowing me to combine all my previous knowledge with a better ear and more context, in such a helpful way for my practice room. I have also found a strong passion for exploring under-represented composers.

What do you get up to in your one-to-one sessions?

I am so lucky to have Evan Rothstein as my mentor. He has helped me identify my weaknesses and strengths, so I know what to work on for when I audition to Guildhall this coming autumn. Also, my practice routines have improved greatly and I have gained more confidence in my performing.

How have you found studying online?

GYA Online is a special online platform - we use Zoom (with original sound on for musicians) and send homework projects to our inspiring tutors on Moodle.

What would you say to other young people thinking about studying with GYA Online?

If you are a music student who wants to become a professional musician of any sort, but have no idea how to pursue your childhood dream, apply.

What’s next for you?

I am working towards a career as a professional violinist in an orchestra or chamber ensemble.

We look forward to working with Olivia in her second year on the course.
