Head of Learning Centre for Young Musicians

Department: Centre for Young Musicians (part of the Guildhall Young Artists network)
Full-time (35 hours per week); 0.8FTE considered.
Contract: Fixed term, for 18 months with the potential to extend.
Start date: April/May 2026 (or sooner by mutual agreement)
Salary Range: £59,060 to £66,670 per annum (inclusive of Inner London Weighting), depending on experience.

About Centre for Young Musicians (CYM)

Part of the Guildhall Young Artists network, Centre for Young Musicians offers music provision to talented young people from all backgrounds in a thriving musical environment.  As a Centre for Advanced Training under the Department for Education’s National Grant for Music and Dance, CYM is a key provider of instrumental, vocal and ensemble tuition in London.  

Our Saturday school and holiday courses offer a sustained and progressive route from the early stages of learning through to music college entrance.  Children start on our primary years programme (age 5 upwards) progressing to the Full Programme (aged 8 to 18).

CYM also manages the London Schools Symphony Orchestra and London Youth Wind Band holiday courses, which combine a rich history and legacy with bold, forward-thinking ambition.

 

Role Summary:

We are seeking an inspirational and dynamic leader to join CYM as Head of Learning.  This is a key senior role, working closely with the Head of CYM to help shape and deliver the Centre’s educational vision and strategy for a community of over 500 young musicians, while supporting CYM’s continued development, ambition and growth. 

The post-holder will be responsible for the curriculum, the quality of teaching and learning, and the impact of CYM’s educational provision across the Centre, ensuring a coherent, inclusive and high-quality learning experience for every student.

The Head of Learning will line manage Heads of Department, oversee areas of provision not led by a department, take responsibility for timetabling and learning pathways, lead on quality assurance and data-informed improvement, and act as Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) for CYM.

This role offers the chance to shape learning at one of the UK’s leading specialist music centres and to play a central role in supporting progression and achievement for young musicians from all backgrounds. 

Key Responsibilities (summary)

  • Provide strategic and educational leadership across CYM, contributing to the Centre’s educational vision and priorities.
  • Lead curriculum and programme design, review and development
  • Line manage Heads of Department and support staff development
  • Lead quality assurance, monitoring, evaluation and use of data
  • Oversee timetabling and student learning pathways across the Centre
  • Act as Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)
  • Work collaboratively across CYM, the Guildhall Young Artists network and the wider Guildhall School

The post-holder will be a key member of CYM’s senior leadership team and will deputise for the Head of CYM as required.

Essential Requirements

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have significant leadership experience in a music education or specialist learning setting
  • Demonstrate strong experience of curriculum or programme design, delivery and evaluation
  • Have experience line managing staff, including recruitment, induction and appraisal
  • Show a clear commitment to inclusion, widening participation and supporting progression for students from underrepresented backgrounds
  • Have excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrate sound understanding of safeguarding and student wellbeing

Work pattern

Tuesday to Saturday during CYM term time; Monday to Friday outside term time.  This role requires flexibility to attend occasional rehearsals and concerts on evenings and weekends, with time given in lieu.

Development Coordinator

The Development & Alumni Relations Office (DARO) at Guildhall School is responsible for securing philanthropic income and managing relationships with alumni and supporters.

We are currently seeking a Development Coordinator to provide essential administrative and event support to our team. In this varied role, you will act as the first point of contact for alumni, donors, and students, manage key data and correspondence through our database, and support the delivery of fundraising and alumni events. You will also assist with the School’s Scholarship Programme, liaise with stakeholders across the School, and help ensure our communications and records are accurate and up to date.

Ideal candidates will have excellent communication and organisational skills, strong attention to detail, and confidence in managing multiple tasks in a busy environment. Experience in providing administrative support is essential, and proficiency in Microsoft Office is desirable. Most importantly, you will be an enthusiastic individual with a willingness to learn.

Programme Leader, BA Production Arts

Permanent contract, full time
Salary range: £59,060 – £66,670 per annum inclusive of all allowances

We are seeking an outstanding individual to take up the post of Programme Leader, BA Production Arts.  

The Production Arts Department at Guildhall is responsible for the delivery of the BA Production Arts, BA Performance Design and MA Collaborative Performance Making. Across this portfolio of programmes, it addresses a wide range of performance making skills. The undergraduate programmes focus on skills in automation, costume, design, lighting, production management, prop making, scenic art, scenic construction, show control, sound, stage management, and video design and production. Students have substantial opportunities for learning in and through production projects – these are largely undertaken in collaboration with the Drama Department (plays), the Opera Studies department (operas, including excerpts and shorter-form pieces), Guildhall Production Studio (GPS, digital media projects) and external partners. The Department undertakes research, outreach, and industry engagement across its areas of specialism. 

The Programme Leader, BA Production Arts works closely with the Director of Production Arts and senior colleagues to provide leadership of the BA Production Arts programme and across the department’s activities in Guildhall School. This includes interactions with external stakeholders, including staff recruitment, student recruitment (including outreach, access, and participation), programme delivery, quality assurance, student experience, research, and industry engagement. They will have significant responsibility for successful programme delivery; the student experience in relation to all academic elements including the management of resources associated with programmes; and staffing, including line management of the Heads of Pathway, staff development, and engagement with industry and other external stakeholders. 

The Programme Leader role will be combined with other duties in accordance with specialism and institutional need, as agreed with the Director of Production Arts and in accordance with a balanced workload overall. 

The successful candidate will have significant experience of programme/education management within Higher Education settings; and theatre/performance practice in a range of settings. You will have the ability to contribute to the Department’s profile and public-facing activities (e.g. through research and/or professional practice, sector engagement, and external networks); demonstrate excellent interpersonal and organisational skills, and a commitment to equity and inclusion.

The postholder of the Research Support Officer (Impact) position will support staff at Guildhall School to translate their research and practice into impact. Working with the Head of Research, and the Head of the Research Office, they will take a major role in the project management and co-ordination of the School’s impact submission to the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2029.

The role holder will also collaborate closely with colleagues across teams, manage relevant impact databases, and provide expert advice on impact pathways and appropriate forms of research impact evidence. They will deliver tailored training to staff at all career stages, identify opportunities to strengthen and broaden our impact portfolio, and support the development, documentation, and communication of impact for research assessment exercises. They will bring expert knowledge and extensive experience of impact capture processes, REF requirements and best practice in the sector.
