Guildhall School of Music & Drama announces Autumn Evening and Half-Term Courses for 2023

Evening and Half-Term Courses for 2023 include Music, Drama, Creative Writing, Poetry, Arts PR, Event and Production Management and Introduction to Arts Evaluation.

Autumn Evening Courses include:

  • Monologues: Connecting to the Text (in-person), for anyone who would like the tools to unpack even the most challenging script and command an audition room. 
  • Creative Writing for Live Performance, Level 2 (in-person), for writers or performers with some writing experience, that would like to complete a solid first or second draft of their script and see their work performed by professional actors. 
  • Film Music Composition: Intermediate (online), for anyone with a passion for cinema and film music and some experience*, wanting to develop skills in writing music for a wide range of film genres. *Please view the course page for criteria 
  • A Guide to PR in the Arts (online), for anyone interested in working or gaining an understanding of arts PR, from a leading performing arts media relations agency. 
  • Introduction to Event & Production Management (online), for anyone interested in learning the skills required to production manage a variety of shows and events, whilst understanding how to solve the challenges that come with such a varied role. 
  • Introduction to Arts Evaluation (online), for producers, project managers, project assistants and those working in the cultural sector, who want to learn how to communicate the impact of their work in a way that is effective, creative and most of all accessible. 

Taking place from 6.30pm onwards, these online and in-person evening courses, which are all for ages 18+, focus on skills within drama, writing and music, as well as key skills in the creative industries. Courses are aimed at a range of levels – from beginners to industry professionals.

The booking deadline for Autumn Evening Courses is 5pm, Friday 22 September. 

Autumn Half-Term Courses include: 

  • Shakespeare for GCSE: Mastering Macbeth, for anyone aged 14–17 who would like support with their GCSE course in a way that is fun and easy to understand. 
  • Writing Poetry for Beginners, for anyone aged 13–17, who want to write poetry and delve into the depths of their imagination. 
  • Introduction to Screen Acting, for anyone aged 18+, who would like an introduction into the techniques and skills required for acting in film and television. 
  • Shakespeare Masterclass, for industry professionals and those in training (including acting and directing students), aged 18+, looking to unlock an audition piece or role using golden clues within a verse. 

Taking place during the October Half-Term, these in-person courses focus on drama and poetry writing and are perfect for ages 13+. Courses are aimed at a range of levels – from beginners, right up to industry professionals – and offer you the chance to learn new skills, develop a passion or get some extra support with exams, over the course of one or two days.

This new six-week evening course will empower you to command any audition room and provide you with the tools to unpack even the most challenging script.

Shakespeare: An Experiential Workshop, Level 1
Tuesday evenings, 26 September–31 October 2023, 7–9pm
Ages 18+

This six-week evening course for beginners will give you the tools you need to approach and perform Shakespeare with confidence. The course will unravel and demystify Shakespeare’s language through practical exercises, identifying key acting clues within the text.

Introduction to Acting Practice, Level 1
Tuesday evenings, 26 September-31 October 2023, 7–9pm
Ages 18+

This six-week evening course for beginners, will explore what "good acting" might be and how actors can achieve it. During the six sessions, you will work with the course tutor to develop truthfulness and connection to text.

Introduction to Acting Practice, Level 2
Wednesday evenings, 27 September–15 November 2023, 7–9pm
Ages 18+

This eight-week evening course will help you to further develop your work and grow as an actor. You will focus on building your confidence through regular scene rehearsals and group sharing and will develop new ways to approach characters and connect to text, all within a small and supportive ensemble.

Stanislavsky: A Practical Introduction
Wednesday evenings, 26 September–01 November 2023, 7–9pm
Ages 18+

This six-week evening course will equip you with acting techniques set out by Konstantin Stanislavsky. The course, which will encourage you to build and develop character through exercises created by Stanislavsky, is designed to take the fear out of what can sometimes come across as a daunting system.

Improvisation, Level 2 
Wednesday evenings, 27 September–15 November 2023, 7–9pm
Ages 18+

Take comedy and drama improvisation to another level in this six-week evening course. Whether you aspire to be on a comedy panel show, want to develop your acting skills, or simply enjoy a pressure-free creative outlet, this course will help you think on your feet, realise your potential, and work on more sophisticated scenes and exercises.

Creative Writing for Live Performance, Level 2

Ages 18+

This seven-week course is for writers looking to complete a solid first or second draft of their script, and who want to see their work performed by professional actors.

Writing for Screen 
Wednesday evenings, 27 September–15 November 2023, 7–9pm
Ages 18+

This eight-week evening course will develop your creative writing skills and provide you with inspiration to translate an idea into a screenplay. The course, which will be taught by writer and actor Emma Dennis-Edwards, will focus on the techniques required for screenwriting for Film and TV.

Singing for Beginners 
Wednesday evenings, 27 September–8 November 2023, 7–9pm
Ages 18+

This six-week evening course for beginners, will introduce you to singing and a number of techniques and exercises that will help to build confidence while improving your voice.

Writing for an Orchestra 
Wednesday evenings, 27 September–1 November 2023,  7–9pm
Ages 18+

This six-week evening course will introduce you to the fundamentals of orchestration and the pivotal role it can play in the communication of musical ideas. You will learn how to write idiomatically for the instruments of the orchestra, as well as how to balance and blend them with one another.

This six-week online evening course will provide you with a thorough introduction to the music business. The course will cover a broad range of topics, including copyrighting, processes around performing, advice on recording contracts and how to apply for public funding to launch your own project.

Skills for the Creative Industries 

A Guide to PR in the Arts

This new four-week online evening course will explore everything you need to know about arts PR; from working with print, online and broadcast media outlets, to how to navigate social media and content creation and everything in between to tell your story.

Introduction to Arts Evaluation
Wednesday 27 September–18 October 2023, 6.30pm–8.30pm, BST (UTC+1)

This new four-week online evening course is for those working in the arts and cultural sector, who want to learn how to communicate the impact of their work in a way that is effective, creative and most of all accessible.

Drama 

Shakespeare for GCSE: Mastering Macbeth 
Sat 28 October–Sun 29 October 2023, 9am–3.30pm and 10am–4.30pm
Ages 14–17 (years 10 and 11)

This two-day course will take you through the core speeches in Macbeth, in an intensive revision session brought to life by professional actors. This course will use performance to bring to life the magic of Shakespeare's Macbeth and help you to revise for your GCSE course in a way that is fun and easy to understand.

Writing Poetry for Beginners

Put pen to paper, let your imagination roam wild and create poems to be proud of with this two-day poetry writing course, led by London writer Annie Hayter.

Introduction to Screen Acting

Ages 18+

This two-day course will introduce you to the techniques and skills required for acting in film and television. Learn key techniques including how to prepare for a scene, be present and how to connect with your scene partner, to give authentic and truthful performances.

Shakespeare Masterclass 
Sat 28 October 2023, 10am–5pm 
Ages 18+

Join experienced classical actor, director and tutor Mariah Gale for this fast-paced and in-depth one-day masterclass. This masterclass will provide you with a step-by-step approach to verse which will enable you to unlock an audition piece, a role or a rehearsal room using golden clues within the verse.
