Biography

From a young age, Kate felt determined to become a professional violinist. She was lucky enough to be offered scholarships to the Purcell School and the Royal Northern College of Music where the journey began. Her main mentors included Felicity Lipman, Yossi Zivoni and the late Chris Rowland. Chamber music quickly became a main focus and close relationships were forged with the Endellion Quartet, the Alban Berg Quartet and Gabor Takacs to name but a few. As a founder member of the Heath Quartet (2002-2007), Kate enjoyed the beginning of a busy chamber music career including a live quartet broadcast on BBC Radio 3 from the Royal Albert Hall and a sold out debut recital at the Purcell Room. The quartet won several young artists awards including the Philharmonia Orchestra/Martin Musical Scholarship Ensemble Award, the Countess of Munster Recital Scheme, Park Lane Young Artists Programme, The Tunnell Trust concert tour and representation from Making Music.Kate regularly performs with the Goldberg Ensemble and has worked with the contemporary groups Ensemble 11 and Psappha as well as working alongside the Apollo Saxophone Quartet and with composers such as Hans Abrahamsen, Anthony Gilbert, Barry Guy, HK Gruber, Oliver Knussen, Steve Mackie and James MacMillan. She has collaborated with the Artemis Quartet on a lecture recital about the string quartet mentality and has performed alongside the Chilingirian Quartet. Kate currently enjoys a varied performing career, ranging from chamber music festivals to orchestral touring. She has regular working relationships with Northern Sinfonia and Britten Sinfonia and is enjoying getting to know the great symphonic repertoire with several of the UK’s leading symphony orchestras. Kate believes that part of the joy of freelancing is the unknown, meeting new and inspiring people and being kept on your toes.
