Guildhall School of Music & Drama Research Residencies
Following its strong performance in the 2021 national Research Excellence Framework and the publication of a new Research Strategy 2022–27, the School invites applications from artists, scholars and researcher-practitioners to base themselves at Guildhall for a period with the purpose of carrying out a range of activities for the benefit and enrichment of the institutional research culture. The School’s research leadership has no preconceived notion of what they might include, save that they should facilitate the exchange of ideas related to research and research-led teaching; support interaction of School researchers with other researchers, scholars, academics, and practitioners internally and externally; and generally develop or catalyse activity within the School’s research community. Precedence may be given to priority or not-traditionally-research-active areas of its work, which at the moment include Theatre, Digital Performance, and Music Therapy.
Prospective applicants are encouraged to read the scheme's frequently asked questions, before getting in touch.

Frequently asked questions
This will depend on the activities proposed and the circumstances of the applicant. Full-time during one or more academic terms (perhaps to coincide with sabbatical leave granted by another employer), or part-time alongside practice obligations, might be the most obviously workable models, but others will be considered with an open mind.
If the applicant is a permanent or ongoing employee at the time of the residency (e.g. is on a paid sabbatical from another institution), then no remuneration will be offered. If, however, the applicant is part-time, a freelancer, or works on a project basis (perhaps as a consultant), then there is some scope for a fee (based on seniority/rank/experience, market norms, and so on) to be negotiated. Please note that, based on the success of the inaugural round of the scheme, competition is expected to be stiff.
We are able to accommodate a range of payment methods, always provided they are HMRC-compliant.
Substantially during academic terms, in order for the resident to be able to work with as many members of the School research community as possible, including undergraduate and postgraduate students, and PGRs. Residencies may also extend beyond term-time, however, e.g. to take advantage of periods in which School spaces are in less intensive use.
Proposals must take the form of a maximum-two-page statement featuring the following headings: My work in brief, How my work could flourish at Guildhall, Planned activities, Anticipated benefits to the School. Please contact research@gsmd.ac.uk for the simple application form.
These will be specific to the proposal, but are likely to include workshops; the devising/making/sharing of practice-research; seminars; presentations and roundtables in the School’s public-facing series of research presentations, ResearchWorks; public and private performances; participation in (or even creation of) research groups at departmental, cross-departmental and School level; and internal and external advocacy for research and research-led teaching; other initiatives to galvanise research activity.
A panel consisting of institutional and departmental research leaders will be convened to evaluate proposals against the aims, objectives and priorities of the Research Strategy and immediate needs of particular departments. This panel will make recommendations to the School’s Research & Knowledge Exchange Committee.
The School is especially interested in welcoming those capable of working across departments and different sub-sections of its research and teaching communities.
The next deadline is midday on 20 May 2024. Please contact research@gsmd.ac.uk for the application form before this date.
While approaches from appropriate interested individuals are welcome at any time, it is hoped that in the future there will be three deadlines a year, to coincide with the term-time meetings of the School’s Research & Knowledge Exchange Committee meetings, such that the process from application to decision could potentially take as little as a few weeks.
Primarily in its scope: it is an objective of the scheme that residents engage with teaching staff and public audiences as well as the research community of the School. Also, the possibility of remuneration makes it accessible to those without permanent employment.
No. However, it is certainly an opportunity for applicants to get a very hands-on impression of the fast-developing intellectual, pedagogical and artistic life of the School, which may well be useful in future applications.
These will be specific to the programme worked out between applicant and host department, but, as indicated above, are likely to include seminars; presentations and roundtables in the School’s public-facing series of research presentations, ResearchWorks; and public and private performances.
Hot-desking in the Research & Innovation Office, some continuing professional development, and some IT facilities. Rehearsal and performance spaces by arrangement with the host department (note these are always heavily booked up in term-time, which is something applicants should bear in mind).
If you already have contacts at Guildhall with whom you intend to discuss this opportunity, that’s fine, but please note that the anticipated popularity of this scheme may preclude in-depth preliminary conversation.
Please contact research@gsmd.ac.uk for the simple application form and we look forward to receiving your completed proposal at research@gsmd.ac.uk
